OSHA Visit and Medical Records A Message from Dr. John Foxen | ||

Part of the OSHA team currently visiting Fermilab consists of
three nurses (RN's) and one physician (M.D.) whose specific
assignment is to evaluate the OSHA-related Fermilab medical
office procedures and practices, along with associated health-surveillance
programs. They are reviewing programs such as respirator safety,
bloodborne pathogens, hearing conservation, ergonomics and protection
from lead exposure.
Part of this process involves review by the OSHA team of several hundred Fermilab employee medical charts. Access to these medical records is always carefully protected. In this case, the compliance audit, and access to the medical charts is authorized by a Congressional mandate for the purpose of evaluating Fermilab's compliance with safety programs. This order is legally binding for Fermilab. The OSHA doctor and nurses are health professionals with full awareness of their professional responsibility to honor medical record confidentiality. Their chart review focuses on information pertaining directly to employees' participation in work-related health and safety programs. Any information they take away from their review will not be linked to individual employee names, but will be used to make general points about Fermilab safety programs. The OSHA team of doctors and nurses have indicated that, if an employee requests his or her chart to be removed from the review process, they would comply with the request.

From WABC-New York, March 3, 2004 Security Concerns at Major Government Lab on Long Island by Jim Hoffer Brookhaven is home to some of the world's top scientists, but the lab may have a security leak. In talks with former workers and an analysis of larceny reports, we discovered that over a two year period, more than one computer a month has been stolen or lost.
The Brookhaven National Laboratory has won six Nobel prizes. Its scientists are among the upper echelon of researchers. They work at a massive facility, developing cutting- edge technologies for NASA, for nuclear weapons decommissioning, and for Homeland Security. They handle important information that should be closely-guarded.

In Memoriam: Tony Barker
Todd Gleeson, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado, attested to Barker's competence and energy
in an email to friends and colleagues: "His knowledge of the University and of science was vast, his counsel was well-reasoned,
and his facial expressions were unparalleled." Barker was an active outdoorsman, and went hiking and skiing every weekend he
could. He passed away at his ski condo in Steamboat Springs.

a Choreographer's Showcase on March 13 at 8:00 p.m.
Created as an opportunity to highlight some of the
most exciting dance in the Chicago area, this year's showcase is no

standing Chicago based Gus Giordano Jazz Dance, to the U.S. and World
