Wonders of Science Show on March 14 Bring your children and your neighbors' children to the Wonders of Science Show at Fermilab on Sunday, March 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Ramsey Auditorium. About 200 tickets ($3 each) are left for this family event, geared toward students grade 2 to 7. Portions of this show have been seen on national television broadcasts including David Letterman Show, CBS News and many more. Award winning high school chemistry and physics teachers will present a fast-paced series of demonstrations on chemical and physical phenomena that will involve your young scientists mentally and, at times, physically! Each registered child, grade 2 to 7, will receive a kit of materials that will enable them to continue their science explorations at home or in the classroom. To register, please fill out this registration form and mail it with your payment check to Nancy Lanning at MS 226 by Wednesday, March 10. Ticket requests will be honored on a first serve basis. In yesterday's issue of Fermilab Today, the Director's Corner stated
that the integrated luminosity for the month of February was
50 fb-1, and 28 fb-1 was the

FYI: AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News, March 1, 2004 House Science Committee Reviews Visa Process House Research Subcommittee Chairman Nick Smith (R-MI) summarized many of the views of his colleagues on the House Science Committee at a hearing last week on the relatively new security procedures surrounding the issuance of visas to visiting students and scholars. Said Smith, "This hearing is not a forum to pit the interests of science against the interests of security. Rather, our task is to eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies in the existing security system that compromise our nation's ability to attract promising scientists and engineers." read more |

From Daily Camera, February 15, 2004 by Eric Zimmerman, MiniBooNE and University of Colorado Citizens the losers in 'security' moves I often work at a federal science laboratory on a large, scenic open campus. Its grounds are a pleasant refuge from the surrounding suburban sprawl, and are used by the public for recreation; a major bike trail crosses the site. The main building at the lab doubles as a community center for arts and culture, and contains exhibits that explain the science to visitors. At the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the nation's flagship high-energy physics facility, an open-door policy promotes education and fosters good relations between the laboratory and its neighbors at the site west of Chicago. Of course, that was before Sept. 11, 2001. Since then, access rules have changed many times, often abruptly.

Science-writing students from Northwestern University's Medill School
of Journalism got some real science to write about when they witnessed
an event display on the CDF control room monitors during their visit
of Wednesday, Feb. 25.
"We were waiting in the control room for collisions, and it was very exciting when they occurred," said instructor Donna Leff, who brought 12 graduate students on this annual visit to the lab. "We actually got to observe it on the computer screen, to get a real sense of what happens." Two of Leff's students had previously spent part of a week shadowing two postdocs at DZero as part of their coursework, and the CDF tour conducted by Michael Kirby of Duke University rounded out the experience. The group started the day with an overview on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall from Columbia University postdoc Geralyn "Sam" Zeller, a Northwestern graduate. Their next stop was the third floor, for tips on literature research from Heath O'Connell and the library staff.
Several of Leff's previous students have gone on to science-writing
careers, including Pamela Zerbinos, who served as a science-writing
intern in the Office of Public Affairs during 2002.
