OSHA Inspection Begins Today | ||

An OSHA Inspection Team begins its work at Fermilab today.
Approximately 25 OSHA inspectors will be combing through
our buildings and ES&H programs to identify areas that are
not in compliance with the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration standards. Based on the list of
noncompliances, Fermilab will report a cost estimate
for bringing our lab into full compliance. The inspection
will also help Congress to determine whether to transfer
regulatory authority for ES&H at Fermilab and nine other DOE
Labs from DOE to OSHA.
There will be 10 inspection teams on site for the next two weeks.
They will be coming through your work areas along with their
Fermilab escorts, whose job it will be to assure the inspectors
see everything safely. If an inspector asks you a question,
answer honestly. Tell them if you don't know an answer,
and ask them for ES&H advice if needed. The inspectors
are here to help. They are also here to learn about Fermilab.

Science Institute Day a Success | ||

Last Friday, more than 200 science teachers from Kane and DuPage counties
traveled to Fermilab to learn about the nature of science
and innovative ways to teach it. The 2004 Science Institute Day
at Fermilab marked the first time that the Symposium on the
Nature of Science, for teachers of grades 6-12, and the Science
Resource Fair, for grade K-8 teachers, were held on the same day.
Keynote speaker Craig Venter took a detour from his current project, a round-the-world sailing trip to collect microbial gene data
While Symposium attendees remained in Ramsey auditorium to
learn about the interdisciplinary nature of science, Science
Resource Fair attendees went to the Lederman Science Center
for a more hands-on experience. Teachers chose from nine
different sessions that presented the latest teaching
tools and techniques, including science-themed comic
strips and micro-chemistry experiments.

Meanwhile, back in the Main Control Room, progress did not stop for the review. The store Friday afternoon set a new luminosity record of 6.8E31, a 30% increase over the record of 5.1E31 that existed one month earlier. More importantly, the integrated luminosity for the month of February was 50 fb-1, an astonishing figure compared to the 28 fb-1 that was the best month achieved in 2003.
Congratulations to everybody who contributed to the
accomplishments in the Tevatron program. The present
performance of the accelerators guarantees exciting
new physics results this summer and provides a strong
foundation for improvements still to come.

February 27 - March 1 - Operations established two stores during this period of time. Those stores provided approximately 54 hours and 45 minutes of luminosity to the experiments. - Operations set a new luminosity record with 67.8E30 for store 3261. - The Antiproton Source set a new stacking record for one hour of 13.6mA/hr. - Store 3261 set a new integrated luminosity record of 3.94 pb-1. - Booster suffered a beam movement problem at extraction.

Spam Tagging at Fermilab On March 3rd, 2004, spam tagging software will be implemented on the Fermilab email gateways. The software will scan all mail coming into the Fermilab network and mark it as spam based on predefined rules in the spam tagging software. The solution is based on the open source application SpamAssassin. If the mail is determined to be spam extra headers will be added to the message. The subject and the body of the message will not be modified in any way. more information
