DOE Press Release
Office of Science Unveils 20-Year Vision for the Future of Basic Research
WASINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science today
unveiled its Strategic Plan, which charts a course for science over the
next two decades that promises dramatic increases in knowledge and
scientific achievements. The DOE’s Office of Science is the nation’s
largest supporter of the physical sciences and a major contributor
to other vital areas of basic research that underpin national security

and economic prosperity.
"Major advances in science including new materials, advanced
computational simulations and new ways to produce energy,
underpin all of the Department of Energy's missions,”
Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said. “DOE’s Office
of Science has developed a bold Strategic Plan that holds
the promise of leapfrogging our current capabilities and keeping
the United States in a leadership position in the international
competition for new ideas and technologies.”

South Dakota Is Dealt a Setback After Hanging Hopes on a Science Project
By James Glanz and Kenneth Chang
The hard-luck towns in the desolate reaches of western
South Dakota have been banking on plans to build a physics
laboratory in an abandoned, flooded gold mine called Homestake
as their path to economic rebirth.
But a letter from Washington under the letterhead of the National
Science Foundation has rained pessimism on all those efforts,
which were spelled out at great length by Gov. Mike Rounds
in his recent State of the State address.
In the letter, Michael Turner, the foundation's assistant
director for mathematical and physical sciences, told
scientists proposing the laboratory that they needed to start over.
All proposals to create an underground laboratory were being
"returned without prejudice," Dr. Turner wrote, so the
foundation could clearly define the scientific need for creating one.
The letter was sent on Feb. 6 and has begun appearing on physicists'
Web sites.

Good Morning!
|
Mike Witherell
|
Today I would like to recognize the Computing Division for working
one million hours without a lost-time injury. The smart people
in the CD have worked safely for 770 days in a row, somewhat
over two years.
Computing Division is leading the way, but the entire Laboratory
is working more safely. Fermilab was given special recognition
for its safety record by the Director of the DOE Office of Science
(SC) Ray Orbach at a recent safety summit meeting.
The DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred) case rate
in fiscal year 2003 was 0.4 per 100 FTEs for Fermilab
and 0.8 for all of the SC laboratories. This corresponds
to the best year ever for Fermilab and for SC.
Let's see if we can do even better this year. To do so,
everybody must plan work carefully and take personal
responsibility for safety.

will take place February 18, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. in the lower
level of the village barn. We will also
have one of our winter building sessions after the meeting.
If you have something you want to build, bring it with you.
Or just come, hang out and talk about rockets!
