Gathering for the contractor appreciation ceremony at NuMI/MINOS. (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
Workers gathered at the MINOS service building at 7:15 AM and 3:15 PM on Friday for NuMI contractor appreciation ceremonies, which included the presentation of commemorative coffee mugs. Ragnar Benson, Inc. is currently wrapping up 15 months of construction on the project done by 50 to 70 workers. Mike Andrews, Fermilab's ES&H Safety Coordinator, said: "We wanted to express our appreciation for the safety and quality of the work, and the fact that it was done on time." Other administrators joining in the appreciation were John Cassidy, Field Safety Coordinator; Rob Plunkett, Deputy Project Manager; Dixon Bogert, Deputy Project Manager of Civil Construction; and Elaine McCluskey, Service Buildings and Outfitting Construction Project Manger.

February 11 - February 13
- Operations establishes one store during this period of time. That store plus one that already exists provides approximately 42 hours and 39 minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- A NuMI power supply trip glitches a feeder that trips off Recycler, which loses its stash.
- Booster suffers from many LCW problems.
- Antiproton Source quadrupole trip causes loss of stack.

Dark side of creation
Good news: cosmologists know what the universe is made of. And the bad news? Most of it is truly indescribable. And scientists still know absolutely nothing about it.
All the stars in all the galaxies - and planets, comets, asteroids, minerals, life forms and so on - across more than 13bn light years of space add up to only a tiny fraction of the whole shebang. Almost a quarter of the remainder is now called cold dark matter, mysterious heavyweight stuff that emits no light and leaves no bruises. You cannot see, touch or bump into it. But it must be there.

University shares details of proposed lab
By Tom Klein
Neutrinos, described as part of the building blocks of the universe, might help rebuild the area's economy if a proposed research station to study them is built near Ash River.
At a Feb. 5 meeting in Orr City Hall, University of Minnesota representatives outlined plans for the lab, which would house a second detector for the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) project. The new device, known as an off-axis detector, would be about ten times the size of the one now in the Soudan mine.

Space Heater Sense
|

Space heater too close to combustible materials |
|
Space heaters can be a risky way to warm your area.
Supplemental heating equipment was the leading cause of home
fires in December, January and February. According to the
National Fire Protection Association, space heaters trail
only cooking equipment as the leading cause of home
fires year-round.
Even though electric space heaters don't have an open flame,
the heating elements of some types of electric heaters are
hot enough to ignite flammable liquids and nearby combustibles
like draperies, paper, clothing, and furniture. It is, therefore,
important to check surrounding objects periodically to see if they
feel hot. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything
that might burn, including the wall.
To prevent electrocutions, always keep portable electric heaters
away from water. Never use them in a bathroom or near a sink.
If you must use an appliance near water, always use a ground
fault circuit interrupter.
Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
