National Engineers' Week festivities will start early this year.
On February 18, at 3:00 p.m. in Ramsey Auditorium, Director
Michael Witherell will present his annual Overview of the
Laboratory followed
by a gathering at the Kuhn Barn for all Fermilab Engineers.
Activities will be in full swing during the official engineers' week, February 23-27, with speakers on various topics each day. Watch Fermilab Today for the full agenda. The Fermilab Engineering community will sponsor its annual food drive to benefit the Batavia Food Pantry. There will also be an opportunity to develop a multi-step "Engineer's Way" to putt a golf ball. Details will be listed in Fermilab Today. The finale is scheduled for Friday, February 27, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Wilson Hall One North conference room, with demonstrations of the golf ball exercise along with an announcement of the results of the food drive. A lunch will also be available consisting of a club sandwich, chips, pop and dessert for $5.00. Reserve a spot for the luncheon by February 25 on WH5E with Connie x5429, Maria x6598 or Martha x4637.

From Nature, February 12, 2004 Budget let-downs With the United States facing tough economic times, science gets small change and less sense of direction from President Bush's research and development budget proposal for 2005. The generally lacklustre trajectory of the US research budget announced last week by President Bush hardly comes as a surprise, given the country's mountainous economic woes. The 2005 budget allows no growth, after inflation is taken into account, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the National Science Foundation (NSF). Most other agencies do even less well, and those with any connection to environmental science, such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, fare even worse. OSHA Inspectors Are Coming To Fermilab | ||

Fermilab will host a federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspection during the first two weeks of March, the last stop in OSHA's inspections of the 10 Department of Energy Office of Science labs in the last year. Congress has mandated DOE to examine the cost of converting safety and radiation safety programs in the Office of Science laboratories from DOE oversight to OSHA and NRC oversight. OSHA's goals for the inspections: 1) identify their costs in assuming regulatory authority; 2) identify the cost of bringing Fermilab operations into compliance with OSHA regulations; and 3) begin developing relationships with our potential regulators.
Reports have been positive from the other DOE labs undergoing inspection. Most have likened the experience to bringing in consultants for a fresh look at their operations.
OSHA, which took advantage of the September 2003 shutdown to inspect
the Tevatron and Main Injector tunnels, plans to inspect every building
on site from Tuesday, March 2 through Friday, March 12. The ESH Section
has established a website
