Women Scientists' Luncheon Celebrates 20 Years | ||

Every month for the last 20 years, a rotating group of women scientists have met for lunch to discuss science, careers, family life and everything else.
"When we started, there were far fewer women in physics than there are now," said Jean Slaughter of the Accelerator Division. Slaughter, Linda Stutte, Gina Rameika, Wyatt Merritt and Prisca Cushman were the five founding members. The luncheon's email list now contains 136 women scientists and engineers associated with Fermilab. Attendees gather to socialize with women from around the laboratory and enjoy the great food at Chez Leon. Senior Fermilab scientists, postdocs and graduate students attend from all experiments and divisions. "We don't often see people from outside of our own experiment," said DZero postdoc Jodi Wittlin. She attended her first luncheon soon after arriving at Fermilab two years ago. "The lunches are a great way of meeting people."
The Women Scientists' Luncheon meets once a month at Chez Leon.
All women scientists and engineers affiliated with Fermilab,

From PhysicsWeb, February 6, 2004 Physicists Attack Cosmological Model Many astronomers believe that the universe is dominated by cold 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' - a view that has been confirmed by recent measurements on the cosmic background radiation. Now, however, a group of astrophysicists in the UK has found that this radiation - the microwave 'echo' of the big bang - may in fact have been modified or 'corrupted' as it passed through galaxy clusters on its way to Earth. The result could undermine previous evidence for both dark matter and energy. Read more |

The DOE Budget Request and associated documents are posted online. The detailed budget justifications posted there include language supporting BTeV, the experimental project given strong support by the High Energy Physics P5 panel last fall: "In FY 2005 we will begin engineering design of a Major Item of Equipment, the BTeV experiment at Fermilab, subject to successful independent cost and technical reviews of the project to take place in 2004. This is a dedicated experiment that is proposed to run at the Fermilab Tevatron after the conclusion of Collider Run II at the end of the decade. This experiment will study CP violation and search for new phenomena in the B meson system with much higher statistics than is possible at the B-factories, including studies of B meson species which are inaccessible to the B-factories."
