Tevatron Reliability Stands Behind Luminosity Records
|
|
FY04 Integrated Luminosity (Click on image and go to slide 2 for larger version.) |
|
The Tevatron has been shattering records for peak
luminosity, but the real story is the Tevatron's increasing
integrated luminosity, according to Dave McGinnis, Associate Division Head
for Systems in the Accelerator Division.
"The Tevatron is running fabulously in terms of reliability,
efficiency and [store] lifetimes," McGinnis says. The store hours
per week, or how much time the Tevatron spends actually colliding batches
of protons and antiprotons, averaged 88 hours at the end of FY03.
But over the last 10 stores, the average is 122 hours--an increase of 38%.
Another important factor: the number of antiprotons that can be
loaded into the Tevatron from the antiproton stack. Protons are
easy to produce; the antiproton supply forms the bottleneck.
In FY03, the antiproton transfer efficiency was 63%. Over the
past 10 stores, it's been 78% --an increase of 24%.
In early January, the integrated luminosity for FY04 stalled less
than halfway to its projected performance due to several periods
of Tevatron equipment failure during December. (See the graph.)
But over the past month, the accelerators have hit their stride.
As of February 5, the luminosity has surpassed expectations.
"I believe we are seeing a payoff from the efforts of many people
during the Fall shutdown," says Jim Morgan, Run Coordinator
and head of operations in the Beams Division Integrations Department.
"In particular, the magnet alignment seems to have contributed to
making the Tevatron operate with better reproducibility."

From the University of Chicago Chronicle, February 5, 2004
Five join American Physical Society
Five University scientists have been elected fellows of the American Physical Society.
Young-Kee Kim, Professor in Physics, was cited “for her precision measurement of the mass of the W boson and her leadership in commissioning the Collider Detector at Fermilab for Run II.”
...American Physical Society fellowships were created to recognize members who have made advances in knowledge through original research and publication or who made significant and innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology.
Each year, no more than one-half of one percent of the then-current society membership is recognized for election to the status of fellow by peer members.

They Did It Again!
Accelerator Operators Achieve New Peak Luminosity Record
Yesterday afternoon, Accelerator Operations Chief, Bob Mau, happily announced
a new peak luminosity record of 5.89 x1031. The previous peak
luminosity record of 5.55x1031 occurred on Wednesday.

The Heartland Blood Center Needs Your Help
|
|
ES&H's Robert Thomas donates blood at the 2001 blood drive. |
|
The next Heartland Blood Center Drive will be on February 16-17, 2004
from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the ES&H Training Room on the Ground
floor of Wilson Hall. It has been nine weeks since the last blood drive
at Fermilab, and type O blood is especially needed.
The blood drive is a two-day event with expanded hours and
Heartland is desperate for Fermilab's support to make this drive a success.
Contributions and participation have fallen drastically since
September 11, 2001.
For appointments you can sign up online
or contact Lori Limberg x6615 or Bob Thomas x6643 to
schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are always welcome. A Photo ID is
required. All donors will receive an entry into a drawing for
one of the following: Chicago Rush Football Tickets, Charlie Fox's Gift
Certificate, Tia Maria Restaurant Gift Certificate,
Graham's Chocolate's Gift Certificate, Kernel Fabyan's Gourmet Popcorn
Shoppe Gift Certificate, Arrowhead Golf Package, Pheasant
Run Golf Package, Brunswick Bowling and Nova 8 Cinemas.
Please spread the word and come out as a
community to support this blood drive.

Housing Assignments - Summer 2004
The Fermilab Housing Office is now taking requests for houses, apartments,
and dormitory rooms for the Summer of 2004. Since there will be a large
influx of experimenters, and requests are anticipated to be in excess of our
available facilities, you
are urged to submit your request for reservations to the Housing Office by
Monday, March 1, 2004. Requests can be made for any period and need not
commence on any particular date. For further information, please contact the
Housing Office at 630-840-3777, or fax to 630-840-2823 or email
housing@fnal.gov
Fermilab Barn Dance
The next Fermilab Barn Dance is on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m.,
with The Dust Devils
and calling by Tony Scarimbolo. Dances are held in the Warrenville
Community Building.
