Tevatron Achieves New Peak Luminosity Record Yesterday afternoon, accelerator operators achieved a new peak luminosity of 5.5x1031. The previous record of 5.2x1031 occurred in December 2003. Accelerator operators also broke the record for single-store integrated luminosity yesterday. Store 3212 achieved an integrated luminosity of 2.6 pb-1. The previous record of 2.5 pb-1 occurred on January 7. |

Staffers from the House Science Committee Visit Fermilab | ||

| On Thursday, January 29, two staffers from the House Science Committee, Tina Kaarsberg and Kathryn Clay, visited Fermilab for a quick tour. MINOS experimenter Chris White explained the inner workings of Fermilab's Tevatron as Kaarsberg and Clay got an overview of the lab on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall. Director Michael Witherell and several Fermilab scientists joined the staffers for lunch Fermilab's cafeteria. Kaarsberg, a former particle physicist, and Clay visited Argonne National Laboratory after stopping at Fermilab. | ||

Pre-Event Notice: National Engineers Week 2/22-2/28 Established in 1951, National Engineers Week is an annual event to raise awareness about the contributions of engineers among all segments of the community. This event also promotes the study of engineering for younger generations as supported by scientific, industrial, educational and government entities. In addition to national and regional events, a number of activities are being planned at Fermilab during Engineers Week 2004, which is February 22-28. These activities will highlight the efforts of engineers at the lab and be offered through brown bag lunches to feature recent accomplishments of the Laboratory’s engineers. Additionally, the annual Director’s Talk is scheduled to take place on February 18th. Vic Kuchler, Chair of the Engineering Policy Committee, is leading the planning effort. Good Morning!
At the time of the DOE review of Run II in July, the review team emphasized the critical importance of the "next six months" in determining how far the accelerators would take us in Run II. We couldn’t have asked for more progress than has occurred since that time. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this success.
Nobody is resting on his or her laurels, however. Yesterday’s store set a new record for initial luminosity, 55x1030. February is off to a good start.

January 30 - February 2 - During this period Operations established two stores. Those stores provided approximately forty-six hours and 24 minutes of luminosity to the experiments. The best peak luminosity of the two stores was 51E30. Since then a store on Feb. 3 set a new record of 55E30. - The integrated luminosity for last week was 7.6 inverse picobarns. - A harmonic filter on the Master Substation failed to close on Friday. - D0 repaired a water leak, but then discovered a power supply problem.
