In Memoriam: George Maslach, 43, Sr. Electronics Technician

George Maslach

George Maslach, a Senior Electronics Technician from the Computing Division who interacted with divisions and sections across the lab, died on Friday, January 23. He was 43.

An employee of four years, Maslach was a member of the Computing Division's Equipment Support Services Group. "He was well liked by everybody," said Group Leader Tim Kasza. "We pair our technicians in teams of two, and everybody always wanted to work with George."

A wake will be held today from 3:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. at the F.J. Sikorski Funeral Home (773-772-6630) at 3630 W. George Street in Chicago. The funeral is on Thursday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. also at the F.J. Sikorski Funeral Home.

Collider Physics of the Future
Dan Green Speaks at Fermilab's Colloquium Today
While the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being assembled at CERN, thousands of physicists and engineers around the globe are busy putting together the huge and complex detectors to measure the particles emerging from the collisions. These are collisions with seven times the energy of our Tevatron.

Today's colloquium at 4:00 p.m. in 1 West, will feature Fermilab's Dan Green, the project manager for the massive (10,000 ton!) hadron

calorimeter of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. Green will talk about the LHC and CMS projects, especially about the exciting physics that may be expected to emerge in the early years. Explore the CMS homepage for more about the project and some amazing facts, such as: The iron of the calorimeter comes from Russian artillery shells; The mass of the 80,000 - crystal calorimeter is that of 24 adult elephants, and 98% of its mass is metal but it is extremely transparent. All are welcome at the colloquium.

Meson Power Update

Full power is expected to return to the Meson area by noon today.

In sub-zero weather early this morning, FESS started restoring power back to the Meson area. "It is going pretty well," said Operations Deputy Head Dan Johnson. "They already have quite a few buildings off generators and back on the feeder." FESS expects full power to be restored to the Meson area by noon today. Short power outages will occur in the Meson area this morning as the generators are disconnected and full power is restored. The power outages will only affect the Meson area.

Prescription Safety Glass Program
The optician will be available Fridays from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the EOC (Ground Floor, Wilson Hall). This change is effective February 1, on a permanent basis.
