Inventory Reminder By now, employees who are custodians of either equipment or sensitive assets should have received inventory lists to be checked, signed and verified. DOE regulations require that Fermilab conduct the Equipment Inventory every two years and the Sensitive Asset Inventory every year. Responses for both inventories are due back to the Property Office (MS 337) on February 6, 2004. DOE places a strong emphasis on the proper care and tracking of government property and the results of the inventories are very important to its evaluation of Fermilab's peformance. Please give the Property Office your full cooperation in getting these done accurately and on time.
Later this year, the Business Services Section plans to make new features
of its property management database system, Sunflower, available to
employees in all divisions and sections to assist in the transfer of assets
between custodians and the management of Property Passes. More news on
those features will be available at a later time.

Meson Power Update | ||

No new news about the Meson area. Full power is still
estimated to return to most of the Meson area
by Wednesday.
Watch for more information in Fermilab Today about a three-hour
outage in the Meson area possibly tomorrow, required in order to make
further repairs.

From Physics Central, January 2004 People in Physics: Chris Quigg
Quigg grew up in Bethlehem, a steel town in eastern Pennsylvania. “In that town and at that time,” he recalls, “being an engineer was really a big deal, and so a lot of my friends aspired to that.” But Quigg perceived the difference between physics and engineering, though in a rather misguided way. “In a child’s caricature, if I could be making the laws instead of applying the laws, that sounded much better to me.”
Now 59 years old and a particle theorist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Quigg knows that physicists don’t exactly make the laws of nature, but he is still passionate about discovering them. Of his early childish misperception of physics, Quigg says, “You have to be misguided in a certain way to be encouraged.”

Good Morning!
The two months since the Recycler was buttoned back up have seen a steady string of successes. The shutdown work improved the vacuum significantly, increasing dramatically the storage time for antiprotons. Accelerator Operations has been contributing a "pbar tax," up to 25 percent of the produced antiprotons, which is used for Recycler commissioning rather than for luminosity. One result of this commissioning was the successful transfer last Wednesday of antiprotons from the antiproton source to the Recycler with a record high efficiency of about 90 percent.
Last Friday, people succeeded on the first try in producing collisions for CDF and D0 using antiprotons from the Recycler-a major milestone, achieved earlier than we could have hoped last October. The Accelerator Division has led the Recycler effort, with contributions from all of the other divisions and from SLAC and Argonne. It is clear that the pbar tax is a promising investment in future luminosity. Congratulations and thanks are due to the many people who have worked on the Recycler along the way.

January 23 - January 26 - During this period Operations established three stores. Those three stores provided approximately forty-eight hours and four minutes of luminosity for the experiments. - Recycler completed its first transfer of antiprotons for a Tevatron store. - The Antiproton Source technicians repaired Debuncher Septum connection. - Booster experts repaired a capacitor and SCR Bridge for the ORBMP power supply.
