Continuing Power Problems in Meson Area
Meson Building
Meson power will remain off for at least two days.
Faults in electrical feeders 30 and 31 beginning on Tuesday evening, January 20, have resulted in repeated and continuing power failures in the Meson Area. Operations Chief Bob Mau reports that repairs are underway but will not be completed until at least Friday.

"What this means," Mau said in a 6 a.m. email message today, "is that Meson power will remain off for at least 2 days. So the name of the game will be lots of generators and restricted power loads in the Meson area."

Generators have been brought on line to produce enough power to keep critical areas from freezing.

"As far as turning on any loads in Meson," Mau said, "Requests should be made to the crew chief in the Main Control Room at 3721. All large loads will probably be denied."

Fermilab Today will provide daily updates on Meson power as they become available.

Accelerator Update
January 19 - January 21
- During this time period Operations established one store. That store combined with one that already existed provided twenty-nine hours of luminosity to the experiments.
- The Tevatron suffered a sector F4 quench on Tuesday.
- Feeder 30 tripped off and caused a problem with CHL and Meson.

Tech group adds Lipinski

U.S. Rep. William Lipinski, D-Chicago, is the latest politician to join the board of the Illinois Coalition, where he'll play a key role in prioritizing projects for the Chicago-based technology and science booster group.

Illinois Coalition President John Maxson said the congressman's membership on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will help the coalition lure major scientific infrastructure and research projects to the state.

along an axis parallel to the reflecting surface. Your sunglasses are treated with a thin film which absorbs that component.

W bosons, the mediators of the weak nuclear interaction, show properties of polarization too. The vast majority of W's produced at the Tevatron are polarized in a way that we call "transverse left handed," while they move slowly away from the colliding beams. Only a small fraction of W's directly produced move much more rapidly, a mechanism explained by the dynamics of the strong interaction (QCD) acting on the colliding quarks in the proton and antiproton. Does QCD alter the transverse polarization of W's?

Yes, and we have measured this effect with the CDF detector, improving an earlier D0 measurement. The transverse polarization, determined by looking at the direction of flight of W-decay products, decreases with higher W transverse momentum (an indicator of the motion away from the beam line) by about 1% per GeV/c. Besides testing the effects of QCD on W production, the result improves the knowledge of the properties of the W boson and helps the precise determination of the W mass. The value of the W mass is a key ingredient to predict the mass of the Higgs boson. A better measurement still is expected using Run II data, which will amount to many times the Run I sample.
