Fermilab's Gallery Chamber Series Acquires New Acoustic Panels

Anyone who has ever been in the atrium of Wilson Hall knows that it is not the most acoustically friendly place. Kids love the 15-story building for its echo, but members of the Auditorium Committee find it quite a challenge, especially when it comes to the
Gallery Chamber Series. To combat this challenge, the Auditorium Committee recently acquired three new acoustic panels that actually have a scientific connection to Fermilab. "The copper clad honeycomb panels were used to build the CMS muon chambers," said Hans Jostlein, of the Particle Physics Division and creative inspiration behind the project. "They required an extremely high precision to make them very flat with measurements that are accurate to a thousandth of an inch. We had a need for them, and CMS was gracious enough to give us three spare panels." The Auditorium Committee recruited Ken Schultz, of the Particle Physics Division, to build mahogany frames for each panel that cover the sharp copper edges. Schultz and other division members are in the process of putting the final touches on the panels this week.
The panels, which will make their grand debut this Sunday, will be set up in back of the musicians, near the balcony on the second floor during each Gallery Chamber Series performance. In past years, the Auditorium Committee used curved panels for each concert, but Jostlein explained that they were very difficult to transport. "The new panels weigh a lot less and can be stored in less space," he said. "Two people can comfortably carry each one, with much less risk of an injury. They also reflect the sound much better. It's nice that a major experiment at Fermilab now has a connection to the concerts too."

Welcome to the Fermilab Network!
Some of our visitors and mobile computer users may start seeing a
banner, "Welcome to the Fermilab Network!" on their web browsers as the Laboratory continues its process
of registering all network devices. Over the next couple
of months, the Computing Division will be implementing a change to the
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service, which resembles
the service now offered in many hotels. Systems that are not already
registered with Fermilab will have their initial network connections
limited to a registration web page. There, the user will have to provide
some basic contact information in order to get full network connectivity.
Systems with registered network interfaces will continue to receive the
same instantaneous and transparent DHCP service they receive today.
The deployment will be phased in order to keep the migration smooth and
problem free. Testing of this service has been underway within
Computing Division network segments in Wilson Hall and the FCC.
The registration service has functioned as expected and user feedback
from visitors and unregistered users has been positive. The next
deployment of the DHCP registration service will be in the DZero
off-line network this Thursday. A deployment schedule for other Divisions
and Sections will be issued once cutover dates can be coordinated with
the respective General Computer Security Coordinators (GCSCs). The
goal is to complete the migration across the entire site network by
the end of February. More details about the DHCP registration process
and rollout are available online.
Systems on-site can determine if they are already registered by performing
a simple test online.

Like Particles, 2 Houses of Physics Collide
By James Glanz
OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 14 — A bland and bulky conference center in this city's fogbound downtown was transformed in recent days into the Elsinore of particle physics. The ghost that continually appeared, disappeared and appeared again during a scientific meeting was not the shade of a murdered king but a puff of primordial matter with an otherworldly name: the quark-gluon plasma.
This drama, like the original, involved not only a clash of great forces but also what some saw as betrayal and a measure of revenge. It drew in a pair of renowned laboratories — two great houses of physics — that have avidly pursued what may be among the most important discoveries in science.

-During this period of time Operations established three stores.
Those stores along with one already established provided
approximately 53 hours and 31 minutes
of luminosity to the
experiments.
- An Antiproton Source Debuncher kicker caused several problems on
Friday and Saturday.
- Experts established beam to the Switchyard dump on Sunday.
- Store 3177 provided a total integrated luminosity of 2.0 inverse
picobarns.
