New Drive-Up Service for Security Check-In

Security Guard Jeff Head in front of a new guard shack on Pine Street
Starting Tuesday morning, January 20, visitors to Fermilab will sign in at a new "drive-up" location after entering the west side of the lab on Pine Street. The initial security checkpoint is in the same location, but visitors needing passes will now be directed from that first checkpoint to a new booth in the parking lot of the Lederman Science Education Center. Then, instead of parking and entering the Lederman Center for their passes, visitors will obtain them at the drive-up window of the new security booth. Pylons and new signage will direct visitors to the new booth, and Fermilab security personnel will also offer guidance.

Special investigation: US visa restrictions
Immigration controls introduced under the 'war on terror' are restricting the flow of foreign researchers into the United States. With other countries moving in on this pool of talent, will the balance of scientific power shift? Nature's Web site features a special on this topic.

Fears Over BNL Funding Change
By Indrani Sen
A new two-tiered system of allocating scientific work related to homeland security has New York congressmen worried Brookhaven National Laboratory may lose millions in federal funding, despite Department of Homeland Security officials' assurances to the contrary.

Under the new system, which department officials say is necessary to give national labs access to the government contracts they are best suited for, Brookhaven and three other labs were left off a list to do classified internal work for Homeland Security, leaving BNL to compete with private firms and academic institutions for external contracts.

Fermilab Paper Chase Shows Consistently High Output

Experimental HEP Publications 1990-2003 (Click on image for larger version.)
In 1993, Fermilab Director John Peoples asked the Computing Division's Peter Cooper to help prepare the lab's annual DOE review. "I had no idea what to do," Cooper recalled, so he used a technique familiar from his time at Yale: "I pulled the journals down off the shelf and asked, 'what did we publish?'"

With help from others, Cooper's initial effort grew into an ongoing compilation of Fermilab's experimental high-energy physics articles published in the five most relevant physics journals

Peter Cooper
(which contain about 95% of US HEP papers). Cooper and his colleagues compared this total to the number of papers from the other US HEP accelerators: SLAC, BNL, and CESR. The group retroactively collected the results back to 1990, and Cooper charts the results online as they are updated annually. The papers from 2003 are now included.

The graph shows Fermilab with a consistent margin over the other individual labs, although there was a noticeable drop-off in papers generated here during the past year. Cooper attributes the dip to having the Tevatron up and running. "You can't analyze your old data when you're busy collecting new data," he said.
