Safety Achievements Continue to Grow at Fermilab
|
|
This chart measures the number
of days since the last DART case occurred. (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
As of this morning, Fermilab is again on the verge of achieving
1,000,000 person-hours worked without a lost-time injury. In addition,
almost all Divisions and Sections have reached more than 100 days
without an injury leading to work restriction or absence (DART).
The buffalo photo on the Laboratory Safety Committee's homepage measures
the number of days since the last DART case. Once all Divisions and Sections
reach 100 days or more without a DART case, a computer randomly selects
three employees to receive Fermilab polo shirts. The picture was last
complete for nine days in August 2003; 27 employees won polo shirts.
Bill Griffing, ES&H Head, also reported that the workdays lost
to occupational injury or illness are steadily decreasing.
"One way of checking our progress on reduction of injuries is to
look at how many injuries result in 'days away from work' when an employee
is unable to work; or 'restricted' when an employee cannot perform
all assigned tasks," Griffing said. The chart below shows that injuries
in the second quarter of 2002 resulted in 64 "Days Aways from Work" and
375 "Restricted Days." The last quarter of 2003 had only 3 "Days Away
from Work" and 90 "Restricted Days" -- quite an accomplishment for over
2000 employees.

A New Map of the Universe, with Advice from Einstein
By Dennis Overbye
In his famous 1976 New Yorker cover titled "View of the World From Ninth Avenue," the cartoonist Saul Steinberg presented an unabashedly parochial version of what the world looks like to a New Yorker: streets and buildings in the foreground, the Hudson River and a narrow strip called New Jersey beyond it. Behind that were some small hills — the Rocky Mountains — an even narrower strip called California, and beyond that a Pacific Ocean barely wider than the Hudson and tiny patches labeled China and Japan.

Klystron Repairs Completed During Holidays
|
A klystron in its 8,000- pound assembly (Click on image for larger version.) |
The Tevatron wasn't the only thing under repair over Christmas. On December
22, while conducting beam studies to optimize the performance of the
linear accelerator, a klystron failed.
Another one had failed around Thanksgiving,
and no one expected two repairs in under a month. There had only been two
other failures during operation since the tubes went into service 12 years
ago.
The Linac uses 7 of these monolith
10-foot-tall vacuum tubes to energize the accelerating particles.
According to Linac department head Elliott McCrory, Linac technicians
and members of the Mechanical Support department worked
12 to 16 hour shifts around the clock from December 22 to December 28,
excluding Christmas eve and Christmas day, until they completed the
necessary repairs. Replacing the klystron
took several people 10 to 12 hours of work. "It takes a significant
amount of pushing and shoving a very heavy object," McCrory said.
Al Moretti, chief Linac RF engineer, applauded
all people involved for their efforts.
