Local password named "administrator" on Windows computers
In order to optimize computer security, the Core Computing Division will disable the local account named “administrator” on all Windows machines beginning 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. This account, which is automatically created on Windows computers, is often targeted for malicious attacks and is therefore a security risk. Users may have created their own local account on their computer to perform administrative functions. Only the account named “administrator”—no other local accounts—will be disabled. For the majority of users, this will have no impact. In the rare case that the local administrator account named “administrator” is required, the custodian should contact the service desk.
