Exceptional Performance Recognition Awards

Performance recognition awards go to selected employees

Fermilab recognized a group dedicated employees for their outstanding contributions with Exceptional Performance Recognition Awards. The employees were nominated by their divisions and sections for the awards. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone handed out the awards at a reception on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall on Friday, Sept. 7.

The following employees received awards:

Accelerator Division

Gerald Annala

Gerald Annala is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding technical and leadership contributions that resulted in the successful operation of the Tevatron during the entire Run II period. Without his dedication and expertise, the Tevatron would not have operated nearly as well.

Bruce Hanna

Bruce Hanna is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his significant contribution to the effort to demonstrate the feasibility of using a single high-power RF source to power multiple accelerating cavities. His outstanding efforts lead to the successful completion of this six-cavity test.

Todd Johnson

Todd Johnson is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding innovative problem solving skills that contributed significantly to the successful operation of the Tevatron. His last assignment was to implement two switches—one to abort the beam and the other to dump the ramp, thus shutting down the Tevatron forever.

Arkadiy Klebaner

Arkadiy Klebaner is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding leadership of the development effort and ultimate procurement of the Superfluid Cryogenic Plant at the Cryogenic Module Test Facility. His excellent documentation, leadership and follow-up on all aspects of the design resulted in its great success.

George Krafczyk

George Krafczyk is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding work in overseeing the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the Booster-corrector power supplies. His efforts have led to a design that has proven to be highly efficient, reliable and compact.

James Morgan

James Morgan is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his outstanding effort for the reconfiguration of Mu2e accelerator modifications required to meet project cost requirements. Because of his leadership, the group reduced costs by $70 million with their recommended changes.

Vladimir Nagaslaev

Vladimir Nagaslaev is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his outstanding effort for the reconfiguration of Mu2e accelerator modifications required to meet project cost requirements. He not only served on this task force, but was the deputy level 2 manager for the accelerator effort.

Tony Parker

Tony Parker is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding contributions in setting up the Teamcenter Service and in getting pilot projects implemented. He exhibited exceptional dedication and creativeness in his work on this project.

James Steimel

James Steimel is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding leadership of the engineering effort to demonstrate the feasibility of using a single high-power RF source to power multiple accelerating cavities. His significant contributions to this project led to the successful completion of this six-cavity test.

Dean Still

Dean Still is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding technical and leadership contributions that resulted in the successful operation of the Tevatron during the entire Run II period. His skills and dedication were essential for the dramatic increase in performance during Run II.

Steve Werkema is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award in recognition of his outstanding effort for the reconfiguration of Mu2e accelerator modifications required to meet project cost requirements. He not only served on this task force, but was the level 2 manager for the accelerator effort.

Yuri Alexahin is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his contributions to the development of novel Booster tune diagnostics and optics improvements at Fermilab and for his development of a novel ionization cooling scheme for 6D muon cooling.

Henryk Piekarz

Henryk Piekarz is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding efforts in the construction and commissioning of the H+ ion source for the successful HINS six-cavity test. This project would not have been successful without his technical expertise and dedication.

Eric Prebys

Eric Prebys is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding efforts in spearheading an investigation of alternative beam delivery schemes for Mu2e that resulted in significant cost savings, resolved technical incompatibilities with g-2 and laid the groundwork for what is now the Muon Campus. He and his committee literally saved the Mu2e project.

Katsuya Yonehara is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding leadership of and contributions to the experimental program at the MuCool Test Area to characterize the operation of RF cavities filled with high-pressure gas in magnetic fields.

He not only acted as project manager for the technical part but was also instrumental in getting pilot projects implemented.

Leah Hesla is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her outstanding service as the communications lead within the Accelerator Stewardship Task Force. She worked tirelessly to distill information from presentations and discussions into a coherent, readable Task Force report, going well above the call of duty in her support of this project.

Al Johnson is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his extraordinary efforts to design, implement and operate a cost-effective audiovisual production infrastructure that allowed people from around the world to watch a live, seamless broadcast of the Tevatron celebration and shutdown procedures.

Steve Dixon is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his superb performance and mature project management skills that ensured that the project schedule and budget were maintained to successfully deliver the NOvA Far-Detector Building. His outstanding efforts resolved many challenges in a remote, offsite construction site.

Vivian O'Dell is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for her outstanding leadership in the U.S. effort on the CMS experiment and for her numerous contributions to its success. She is recognized for excellence in leadership of the US CMS Data Acquisition Program and for leadership in QCD studies at the LHC.

Brian Rebel is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding management of the construction, commissioning, and overall successful outcome of the Liquid-Argon Purity Demonstrator, a prototype for the cryogenic construction of large liquid-argon detectors. The results of this demonstration experiment can be expected to have an impact on particle physics for years.

Kenneth Schultz is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his outstanding pivotal technical role in the design, fabrication, assembly, simulation, documentation and installation of the cutting-edge Dark Energy Camera for the Dark Energy Survey.

Terry Tope

Terry Tope is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his extraordinary work in designing, building and running the Liquid-Argon Purity Demonstrator, the first project to show the necessary electron lifetime for a liquid-argon detector that can be achieved without first evacuating the cryogenic vessel. This is a major advance in liquid-argon detector technology.

Don Mitchell is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his significant contributions to the successful rollout of the Teamcenter System at Fermilab. He helped set the direction and standard to modernize and bring efficiency and consistency to Fermilab's engineering data management practices.

Alfred Nobrega is awarded an Exceptional Performance Recognition Award for his leadership in the design and fabrication of the first single-aperture demonstrator dipole for future accelerators. In his role as project engineer, he provided efficient leadership of engineers, designers/drafters, procurement personnel and technicians involved in this project.

His leadership role as the lead technician in the technical realization of this project led to its successful daily operation.
