Building Bionics Lecture - January 18 - Fermilab Lecture Series
Amazing developments are being made each day in the possibilities for those with limb
loss. Dr. Kuiken has been renowned for his research in developing a surgical technique
called Targeted Muscle Reinnervation(TMR). With TMR it is possible to take the residual
nerves in an amputated limb and transfer them to spare muscle and skin in or near the
limb. The nerves grow into this muscle, and then the surface EMG over this muscle can be
used as an additional control signal. To date, this surgery has been successful in fifty
patients. Here the latest when Dr. Todd Kuiken of Northwestern Univ. speaks at Ramsey
Auditorium on Jan. 18 at 8 pm Tickets $7 by calling 840.ARTS or www.fnal.gov/culture
Gallery Chamber Series - Metropolis Quartet - Jan. 20 @ 2:30
Gallery Chamber Series takes place in the intimate 2nd floor art gallery with Sunday
afternoon concerts, followed by a reception with the performers. Our first artists of the
2013 season are the Metropolis Quartet. Metropolis performs the major oboe quartet
(oboe, violin, viola, cello) repertoire, written by composers such as Mozart, J.C. Bach and
Benjamin Britten. They also seek out lesser-known works by composers, and take
familiar melodies and perform their own arrangements. Each performance is a mix of
wonderful compositions, memorable melodies and fun conversation between the
musicians and audience. Tickets $17/$42 for all 3 concerts of seriesby calling
