Members of DOE Chicago financial team visit Fermilab
Members of the Financial Department of the DOE's Chicago Operations Office toured Fermilab's LHC@FNAL Remote Operations Center yesterday.
On Tuesday, about two dozen members from the Financial Department of the Department of Energy's Chicago Operations Office joined their CFO, Thomas Foley, for a tour of Fermilab. The group spent about half a day on a familiarization tour of the Fermilab site, including the 15th floor, the LHC@FNAL remote operations center and the Linac.
Foley said he wanted his team to take a tour of the site so that they "really know what is behind a lot of the numbers that we deal with." Foley, who has served on review committees at Fermilab, said he feels that he has a good layman's grasp of the science done on site, something he hoped to pass along to his employees.

Meet DOE's L.K. Len
For L.K. Len, working at the Department of Energy is more than just a job: it's a chance to give back. In 1984, seven years after Len came to the U.S. from Malaysia on a Fulbright Scholarship, it was DOE that successfully petitioned the State Department for his U.S. citizenship.
Today, Len holds several permanent managerial positions in the DOE Office of High Energy Physics in addition to serving on a number of current project committees. As the program manager for the Advanced Technology Research and Development Group, he provides oversight of accelerator activities at U.S. labs and manages accelerator activities at universities and evaluates their progress. He also manages the Small Business Innovative Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs, where he handles an average of 200 grant proposals every year.
"I get a lot of satisfaction being able to use my experience to assist our researchers while at the same time developing a program that helps the high-energy physics mission," Len said. "For instance, our decision to invest in a superconducting material and magnet R&D program has resulted in successful technology that is being used in all major hadron colliders today."

CMS pixels and strips meet at the Tracker Integration Facility
The extreme complexity of the CMS experiment makes it difficult to foresee, with sufficient accuracy, all the tiny integration details of all the subsystems of which this experiment is made. It's therefore necessary to test as much as possible on the surface before the final underground integration at P5 can occur. To further this objective, an integration test of the forward pixel and strip tracker was planned. Despite the inauspicious day, the forward pixel commissioning detector was successfully inserted into the strip tracker on Friday the 13th of July at the Tracker Integration Facility at the CERN Meyrin site. During the following two weeks many tests were performed to learn as much as possible about various aspects of the integration: mechanics, electronics, and software. The forward pixel commissioning detector consists of the same type of mechanical and electrical components as the production detector but constitutes only a fraction of it: mechanically it represents a quarter of the final detector and 4% of the 18 million channels.

One of the best parts of my job is working with the Fermilab Children's Center. We care for about 75 children at the center, and it is always a joy to see what the kids are up to.
This year we have expanded the programs and services that the center offers. Ten months ago we introduced the school holiday program for kids whose schools are closed for a day while their parents have to work. Many parents have taken advantage of this program. Encouraged by this success, we now offer the program on even more school holidays.
In response to requests from parents, this summer we ran a pilot program to determine the demand for keeping the center open an extra half hour in the afternoon. Although there was little demand, but we plan to repeat the pilot this fall.
Safety is a top priority at Fermilab, and this includes safety at the center. Each month we have a drill for either a tornado or fire. Earlier this year, we acquired an emergency crib to wheel babies out more quickly. We can evacuate all kids from the center within three minutes. Another safety improvement is the closing of the road in front of the center. Now children can walk safely from the parking lot to the center.
We also sponsor safety programs for parents and children. Together with the sheriff's department, we've conducted safety checks of car seats and handed out ID kits that parents can use for keeping photos on hand in case their child goes missing.
All of this wouldn't be possible without our teachers. Many of them have been with us for a long time, and they are wonderful, dedicated people. Together with the parents, they create a safe and caring community for our children. And they add some fun. From painting clay pots to catching rubber ducks in a pond, our children have had a great summer. All of us are looking forward to the new session, where new faces and old friends will continue a fun learning experience.
Kirk and Butterfield Road construction begins this week
Intersection construction will begin at Kirk Road/Farnsworth Avenue and IL Route 56 in Aurora
the week of August 20, 2007 and continue thru December 2007. Initial work will be off of the
roadway with roadway construction beginning after Labor Day, September 3. Intermittent lane
closures will be required during construction. The project improvement will involve widening
Kirk Road /Farnsworth Avenue from two thru lanes to three through lanes in each direction and
widening IL Route 56 from one through lane to two through lanes in each direction.

School back in session, drive carefully
School is back in session in most communities including Warrenville and Batavia. A school zone, with reduced speed limits during school hours, is located outside the Eastgate on Batavia Road. Please pay attention to school crossings and posted speed limits.
Steering Group draft report discussions August 24 and September 27
All Fermilab employees and users are invited to attend the upcoming
presentations and discussions of the Fermilab Steering Group draft report. The first meeting will be on Friday, August 24 at noon in Ramsey Auditorium. To give users more time to make travel arrangements, a Town Hall meeting organized by the Users
Executive Committee has been scheduled for Thursday, September 27 at 5 p.m. in One West. Fermilab Deputy Director Young-Kee Kim will lead the program at both meetings.
NALWO picnic on August 24
NALWO will host an end of summer picnic on August 24 at 5:30 p.m. The event will be located in front of the Kuhn Barn in the picnic area, or in the barn in case of rain.
