Fehrman gets back on track with vintage racing club

Art Fehrman meticulously observes the site speed limits as he drives for Transportation Services, making deliveries and always being open to meeting new people at Fermilab. But just beyond the friendly bright eyes and shock of white hair lie the skill and daring of a racing driver, accustomed to pushing the limits of car and track. Fehrman was a professional racer for 22 years, traveling the Illinois circuit to places like the Sycamore Speedway, and the Champaign and Kankakee Fairgrounds. Yet he says the wins were not the most exciting part -- the best part was just before the start. "It's when all the people are waving at you and you are strapped in tight before the race," he said. "Just talking about it gets my adrenaline going."
Fehrman quit racing in 1992 because he had a full-time job at Nicor Gas, and speeding around fairgrounds tracks was gobbling up his weekends. "I know too many people who regret not getting that time with their kids," he said. "It was really hard to walk away, but I did it." Walking away was especially difficult because Fehrman had spent his whole life around stock-car racing. His dad was a champion driver who raced on a small track in Hodgkins, Illinois in the 1950s. "I never missed a single one of my dad's races," Fehrman said. "Once I was grown, my dad never missed a single one of mine." Fehrman vowed to return to racing after retiring from his full-time job.
And in February of 2006, Fehrman made good on that vow, but not in the way he might have expected. He decided to start a vintage racing club. "When I first brought it up I was half-joking," he said. "But the response has been overwhelming." Fehrman booked races at local tracks and got friends involved, fixing up old cars found in barns. He was back in touch with old racing buddies that he hadn't seen in years, and new drivers came out of the woodwork to join, too. "I knew it was going to work during the pace lap at the inaugural race," he said, reliving his own favorite moments. "Everybody was standing up and waving at us. There's just something about a '57 Chevy that people seem to identify with."
The next vintage car race will take place at the Sycamore Speedway on June 16, and Fehrman plans to be behind the wheel again. You can learn more here.

Jefferson Lab Cooks Up the Perfect Cavity
While it's said that opposites attract, particle physicists are taking no chances. In hopes of learning what the universe is made of, they're preparing to build a machine that will accelerate and smash together electrons and their opposites, positrons, 14,000 times every second. Like Jefferson Lab's Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), the proposed new machine, the International Linear Collider (ILC), is being designed to use superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity technology.
Drawing on their world-class expertise in SRF technology, Jefferson Lab scientists are assisting in validating the processing methods used to build and prepare ILC accelerator cavities -- the components that will store the radiofrequency waves used to accelerate the electrons and positrons -- for installation. Jefferson Lab scientists have developed a program designed to consistently test the absolute limit of an accelerator cavity's performance, and one baseline design cavity they tested achieved an accelerating gradient of 42 MV/m, a result consistent with the theoretical limit of this particular cavity design.

Last week I had the pleasure of inaugurating the mothers' nursing room on the 9th floor of Wilson Hall with the aid of some babies who, as babies are wont to do, immediately went for the most dangerous item in sight, namely the sharp scissors I used to cut the ribbon. The development of the Mothers' Room is one small step in our efforts to make and keep Fermilab a "family-friendly" place of work. As with so many good things at Fermilab it was the product of a few committed individuals who designed it and saw the project through to the benefit of many in the years to come. Today "family friendliness" is an important component in the laboratory's ability to attract and retain the best staff. As our society becomes more complex and fast-paced the trend continues toward a majority of mothers and fathers working outside the home. At Fermilab, the policies and facilities that support our families are critically important. We are fortunate to have great assets established long ago like the Children's Center now some twenty-seven years in operation and a set of policies that have served us well in the past. There is always room for improvement and evolution, however, as we learn and implement best practices in this area.
Last week I also received the report of the committee I established last year on "Hiring and Retention of Scientific Staff." While the focus of the report was on the scientific staff of the laboratory, many of its recommendations have applicability to everyone at Fermilab. The committee did an extensive job in studying practices both nationally and internationally to come up with an extensive list of recommendations. A significant number of recommendations were in the area of creating and supporting an attractive work environment and enhancing Fermilab as a family-friendly enterprise. Creating such an environment is a responsibility we all share. I look forward to analyzing and implementing these recommendations.
Weight Watchers meetings
There will be another free Weight Watchers information meeting on Wednesday, March 21 at 12:00 p.m. in the WH15NW Conference Room. The meeting will include an overview of the TurnAround Program, including cost and payment options. The March promotion is 12 + 1 free week for $144.00. Payment can be made with cash, check, any of the 4 major credit cards, or a 3 part payment. Payment will be collected at the meeting and a final count of 18 participants must be met to continue the program. As long as at least 18 payments are received in hand, the classes will continue on Wednesday, March 28, for week 1 of the series. The series will run from March 28 until June 20, 2007. The regular weigh-in time will be 12:00 p.m. and the meeting time will start at 12:30 p.m. If you cannot attend the information meeting, you can leave your payment with the Recreation Office beforehand. Free heart health screenings
The Fermilab wellness committee and Delnor Community Hospital will present a "Know Your Heart" health risk assessment screening to the Fermilab community. The program provides an opportunity to identify your risk factors for heart disease. This free heart risk assessment includes a lifestyle questionnaire, a blood test with immediate results, tests for blood pressure and body mass index, one-on-one counseling and free educational material. The screenings will take place on Tuesday, March 27 and Thursday, April 26 from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Wilson Hall 15NW. Participants must be 18 years of age, and must fast for 12 hours before the screening. Find out more information and sign up online at the ES&H website.
Free heel scans for osteoporosis
This free screening is open only for new participants. The Wellness Committee and the Delnor Community Hospital will sponsor free heel scans for osteoporosis on April 4 from 7:30 to 10:45 a.m. in Wilson Hall 15NW. The ultrasound test measures the bone density in the heel to indirectly predict a person's risk for osteoporosis. The screening is open to both men and women. Participants with heel/ankle fractures or surgery to both feet are excluded from this screening. There are only 40 appointment times available for this, so please make sure that you will be able to make the appointment time given to you. Sign up at the ES&H home page.
