|Eagle Scout Projects Help

With the assistance of Fermilab employees, two local teenagers--Matt Wischoeffer, of Aurora, and Will Butts, of Geneva--recently completed their Eagle Scout projects focusing on improvements to the lab's environment and visitor friendliness.
By next summer, Wischoeffer hopes a new species of butterfly will be fluttering around Fermilab's natural landscape. Wischoeffer, with the help of Tom Peterson, of the Technical Division, Bob Lootens, of Roads & Grounds, and a slew of volunteers, planted almost 100 turtlehead plants in on-site wetlands locations. The plants are the main food source for Baltimore Checkerspot butterflies, a black, white and red-spotted species found locally, but not on Fermilab's land. During the next few summers, Peterson hopes to introduce the butterflies to the wetlands using 10 cages Wischoeffer built for the project. "These butterflies are part of the whole fabric of a wetland ecosystem," Peterson said. "They're one more piece of the puzzle to restore the natural habitat."
In a wooded area southeast of the Lederman Science Center, five new wooden benches are positioned by the water. With the assistance of
Lootens and Priscilla Meldrim, of the Education Office, Butts made the new seating possible. The area is meant to accommodate touring student groups as well as anyone else who wants to rest in the natural setting. Butts raised money for the project through a garage sale, recruited a group of volunteers and oversaw construction and installation. He will return next year to add a sealant to the seats. "It's nice that I could do something with Fermilab," he said. "I love this place, it's so beautiful, so I'm glad I could help."

Two weeks a year the sun sets at just the right spot on the horizon to reflect off the windows of highrise buildings in downtown Chicago.
The week before Fall starts (Autumnal Equinox; this year on September 22) and the week after spring starts (Vernal Equinox) are the only two times that the reflection of the sun of the windows line up with Wilson Hall.

Grid - The Key to Scientific Collaboration:
A Joint UNESCO-ROSTE and CERN Event
Grid computing, designed as an open, distributed computing paradigm, has rapidly moved to the centre of attention as a key future-oriented technology. Just as for the World Wide Web back in the 90s, CERN* is one of the driving forces behind grid computing.
Based on the collaboration-fostering and research-enabling role of the grid, CERN and UNESCO-ROSTE** are taking the opportunity to invite current and future grid participants, universities and research institutions to a grid event hosted by CERN in Geneva.
Last week the P5 Subpanel of HEPAP visited Fermilab
for two days. While we are not privy to the executive sessions and their conclusions, many members commented that they were impressed by the laboratory's presentations. The progress we have made in the accelerator arena is dramatic, especially for those committee members who have witnessed our exertions in the past. Of course, we need equally dramatic improvements in the future if we are going to double our luminosity rate.
The presentations of D0 and CDF both on physics reach and personnel projections for future years demonstrated the seriousness with which the collaborations and the laboratory have tackled the issues. Furthermore, the collaborations worked closely together, which was a very positive sign to the committee.
To fully exploit the Tevatron program we need to deliver on the sensitivity improvements for the detectors, retain strength in the collaborations working with the universities and the funding agencies, and deliver on the luminosity projections. None of the tasks is easy, and doing all three will challenge us. The rewards on the other hand could be extraordinary. In the meantime I want to congratulate everyone who contributed to a great set of presentations.
