Operation Terminology


Coupling describes an undesirable situation that occurs when particle motion in the transverse planes act in a related way rather than independent of each other. The frequency in which the beam oscillates in the two transverse planes must be carefully controlled (see Transverse). If these two oscillations are "aware" of each other because of coupling, this limits the ability to set these frequencies to the proper values, and so can reduce the stability of the beam.
