Accelerator Update for May 7, 2008 - May 9, 2008

 

Wednesday May 7

The day shift began with Tevatron (TeV) experts conducting end-of-store (EOS) studies, with Operations monitoring store 6121 (19.4E30) and the Recycler stash (355.8E10), with the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stacking (29.1E10), with the Main Injector, Booster, and Linac operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) not using the beam due to the EOS study, and with the NuMI and SciBooNE / MiniBooNE (BNB) experiments taking beam.

At 8:14 AM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF7) tripped off. It reset.

At 8:18 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6121 at 9:35 AM.

RF experts reported at 9:40 AM that they were investigating the TeV RF station 2 (TRF2) problem.

A mechanical expert reported at 9:43 AM that he was switching the TeV sector F4 LCW from pump #2, its normal operating pump, to pump #1. This was to verify that pump #2 was sound.

Operations reported that a TeV vacuum pump (IP7A) was turned on at 9:47 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 9:49 AM.

Operations put Pbar into standby at 9:58 AM while Pbar experts began work on their target station.

LCW experts reported at 10:03 AM that they were making up water for the TeV at CUB.

At 10:15 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 11 AM, a TeV vacuum pump (IP7A) tripped off. It will be turned on in between stores.

At 11:15 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:20 AM, LRF1 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:31 AM, the TeV suffered a quench during step 22 of the squeeze. This was a multi-house quench. Operators investigated.

Pbar experts reported at 12:02 PM that they had completed their target station work. Pbar resumed stacking.

At 12:13 PM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 12:23 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

An instrumentation expert reported at 12:51 PM that he was rebooting the MIBEAM DCCT VME.

At 1:02 PM, BRF7 tripped off. It reset.

Mechanical experts reported at 1:32 PM that they had completed their work on the LCW pumps at F4. Pump #2 was online in local mode.

Operations prepared CDF for access at 1:40 PM.

D0 went in on access at 2 PM.

Operations resumed sending beam to MTest at 2:03 PM.

At 2:17 PM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

A MI expert began a study period at 2:32 PM.

At 2:55 PM, KRF6 tripped off for the first of two times in two minutes. It would not reset. Linac experts investigated and later reset the station.

Operations put Pbar into standby at 3:10 PM.

CDF came out of access at 3:43 PM.

Operations reported at 3:49 PM that the cause of the multi-house quench was due to a B0 quadrupole magnet (B0Q3) that quenched very slowly, which allowed the beam to blow up before the abort was pulled.

D0 came out of access at 3:57 PM.

At 3:59 PM, a MI Lambertson (I:LAM52) tripped off. This occurred during the Recycler stash and caused the loss of one transfer in MI. Operations discovered that an extraction timer was set incorrectly.

At 4:06 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 4:12 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons three times during the day shift.

Operations reported at 4:45 PM that the TeV check out had begun.

At 5:10 PM. KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:18 PM, the TeV suffered a quench in sectors F1 and F4.

At 5:48 PM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

MTest experimenters reported at 6 PM that they were through with the beam for the day.

Operations reported at 6:10 PM that the TeV was QBS ramping.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 6:44 PM.

TeV experts began a study period at 7:43 PM.

At 8:43 PM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:52 PM, Operations reported that during a stash about 1/3 of the antiprotons that made it to the Main Injector stayed there and then aborted.

At 9:58 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:48 PM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:49 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF23) tripped off and caused BRF13 & 14 to trip off. Everything reset.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed six times during the evening shift.

Thursday May 8

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring the stash (235.0E10), with Pbar stacking (50.3E10), and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 12:52 AM.

At 2:07 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6127 at 2:28 AM with an initial luminosity of 193.61E30.

At 3:05 AM, BRF13 tripped off and would not reset. Operators bypassed the station and called in an RF expert.

At 3:35 AM, BRF8 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:36 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:15 AM, the RF expert reported that BRF13 had a power amplifier problem. He tried to bring BRF1 up, but he had no luck there either. Operations lowered the Booster intensity.

At 5:26 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:11 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established 8 GeV beam to the MTest experiment at 6:50 AM.

At 7:17 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

Operations turned off beam to all users at 7:30 AM for the following work:

  1. Booster access to repair BRF1 and BRF13
  2. NuMI Absorber Hall access for investigation
  3. Pbar Vault access for target preparation work
  4. Pbar studies

Operators put Pbar into standby at 7:31 AM and prepared Booster for access.

Operators prepared NuMI for an access at 7:35 AM.

Operations reported at 7:46 AM that the Recycler had stashed three times during the midnight shift.

A Preaccelerator expert accessed the I- Source at 8:21 AM to check the generator brushes and to do some maintenance work.

Recycler experts made a short access into MI-31 at 8:34 AM.

Linac experts reported at 8:39 AM that none of their work would be in the beam line.

At Linac expert reported at 9:23 AM that he had completed his work on LRF5.

A MI expert began a RF study at 9:45 AM.

A RF expert reported at 10:47 AM that he was going to change out a module for MIRF15.

At 11:02 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

A RF expert reported at 11:23 AM that he was going to change out a module for MIRF16.

Operations reported at 11:30 AM that the Preaccelerator work was completed.

Recycler experts made another short access into MI-31 at 11:36 AM.

Operations began the Booster turn on at 11:37 AM.

At 11:53 AM, BRF13 tripped off for the first of three times in about an hour. It reset.

At 11:58 AM, BRF3 tripped off. It reset.

A Booster kicker expert reported at 12:20 PM that he had completed his work on MP03.

Operations established beam to NuMI, BNB, MTest, and Pbar at 12:32 PM.

At 12:46 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (B:IP61) tripped off. It reset.

At 12:59 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 1:05 PM, BRF18 tripped off. It reset.

At 1:21 PM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 1:54 PM, BRF 3 & 4 tripped off. They reset.

At 2:09 PM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:37 PM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:58 PM, KRF3 & 6 tripped off. They reset.

A MI expert began another coalescing check at 3:41 PM.

Operations reported at 3:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed two times during the day shift.

The MI study ended at 4:53 PM.

At 5:33 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

MTest reported at 6:10 PM that they were done with the beam for the day.

Operations reported at 6:18 PM that Booster and MI experts were tuning for higher intensities.

At 7:45 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:38 PM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:13 PM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6127 at 9:35 PM.

At 9:41 PM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 9:51 PM.

At 10:11 PM, the TeV aborted at sector B0. There was no quench.

At 10:41 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:09 PM, the TeV aborted at sector B0. There was no quench.

At 11:44 PM, the Pbar beam permit tripped off due to bad beam positions. It reset.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed five times during the evening shift.

Friday May 9

The midnight shift began with the TeV in a shot setup, with Operations monitoring the stash (64.3E10), with Pbar stacking (18.2E10), and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

Operations established store 6128 at 12:01 AM with an initial luminosity of 255.9E30.

At 12:11 AM, BRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 12:34 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:18 AM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:31 AM, LRF1 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:24 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:13 AM, Operations reported a TeV sector F0 compressor alarm. Cryo system experts at CHL investigated and reported that the #4 compressor had tripped. They said that it could remain off for now.

At 4:52 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:49 AM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:49 AM, KRF7 tripped off. It reset.

Operation resumed sending beam to MTest at 6:31 AM.

At 7:50 AM, BRF13 tripped off. It reset.

At 7:53 AM, a Pbar Debuncher beam valve (D:BV728) closed. It reset.

At 7:55 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:56 AM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the midnight shift.

The Plans for Friday and the Weekend

The plans for today are to allow Linac and Pbar experts to conduct studies. Operations will terminated store 6128 early this afternoon and allow D0 to make a 90 minute access. After the access, the accelerator complex will resume normal stacking, stashing, and storing for the rest of the day and the weekend.
