What is IARC?
The Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) is a new accelerator research facility being built at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
IARC will provide a state-of-the-art facility for research, development and industrialization of particle accelerator technology. The design and construction of the IARC facility is jointly funded by DOE ($13M to refurbish an existing heavy industrial building on the Fermi site that will be incorporated into the IARC complex) and the State of Illinois ($20M) for design and construction of an addition to this heavy industrial building.
A major focus of IARC will be to develop partnerships with private industry for the commercial and industrial application of accelerator technology for energy and the environment, medicine, industry, national security and discovery science. IARC will also offer unique advanced educational opportunities to a new generation of Illinois engineers and scientists and attract top scientists from around the world.
IARC will make critical contributions to the technological and economic health of Illinois. It will attract new private industry partners for the commercial and industrial application of accelerators that will create new hi-tech jobs. It will provide a unique education opportunity to collaborate with local universities and train a new generation of scientists, engineers and technical staff in accelerator technology. As a steward of accelerator development in the Department of Energy's Office of Science, Fermilab will also have an increased opportunity to pursue future proposed particle accelerators, such as Project X, the International Linear Collider or a Muon Collider. Ultimately, IARC will place the state of Illinois in a position to become the world leader in accelerator research, development and industrialization.
