Prairie Reconstruction
Illinois's prairies have virtually disappeared. Since 1974, ecologists and volunteers have reconstructed more than 1,000 acres of tall-grass prairie. The Fermilab site also encompasses woodlands, wetlands and agricultural fields that host beavers, butterflies, falcons and many other animals. In 1989 the Department of Energy named Fermilab a National Environmental Research Park, encouraging scientists to conduct studies of its ecosystems.
