In 1907 a Batavia youth, Augie Mier, was hunting rabbits when he came across an abandoned cemetery in a thicket of raspberry bushes. General Thompson Mead, a veteran of the war of 1812, is buried here. The site also commemorates eighteen early settlers to the area, with the last historical burial in 1871. In April 2000 Robert Wilson, the founding director of Fermilab, was buried here in accordance with his wishes.
