NuMI Project Construction
Many of Fermilab's nearest neighbors to the west have heard the effects of construction for a new project, Neutrinos at the Main Injector. Blasting for the project has sometimes rattled windows. In February 2001, neighbors received a letter with information about progress on the project and on its effects on nearby neighborhoods. In May 2001, a second letter provided another update on the NuMI construction. A third letter was send in December 2001 with the latest news.
On May 31, 2002, the S.A. Healy company carried out the last blast, completing the excavation of tunnels and underground halls. Contractors are now working on transforming the excavated space into excellent science laboratories, as described in the fourth letter to the neighbors.
