| Contrasts - The Photo Exhibition |
Fred Ullrich
All three descriptions of contrast are celebrated in this photographic exhibition. Look around at the variety, texture, and characteristics of these images to reinforce this theme. When comparing my work to the exhibition's title, I will argue my most successful efforts are the narrowly focused dissimilar images of similar or familiar objects, on which I have used the natural light. It is these dissimilar qualities that catch my eye, interest me and motivate me to work hard to create a picture.
My photography in its simplest form is a recording of a specific time and place, (my completed work reflects this through the date and location indicated on each image). In its greater form my photographs are recordings of common objects captured in "expressive light" that enable unexpected qualities to be seen of the physical world around us. The quality of light is the starting point for all of my photographic images. It is the crucial element that determines what will be photographed, allows the subject to be seen and expressed. When using "expressive" light I am able to concentrate solely on my subject with the confidence that the subject alone will carry the photograph. In fact I often look for ways to reduce other graphic information not related to the visual theme to let the subject "sing-by-itself". If I am successful I have created an image that has satisfying qualities and even surprises!
