John Slavik
My work has been described as being conceptualized abstraction. I focus on constructing objects on the verge of coherence.
Each piece is a part of a greater experience. By juxtaposing, condensing, and re-contexualizing incongruous elements, I deal with who I am and in turn create a dialogue of places and people I'm connected to.
Over the last few years I have attempted to reduce forms to the barest essentials exploring subtle distinctions involving surface and form. I've made attempts to directly engage the observer in a emotional, tactile, and visceral level.
My work is like an adventure. I know my direction, but the process of getting to my destination and completing the conceptual and literal cycle is a challenge. Bringing the idea to fruition shapes my life, makes the lows more palatable and the highs enhanced.
