MINUTES of the Nu-Factory Physics Study Group Meeting Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 Present: Debbie Harris, Eric Hawker, Stephen Parke, Rajendran Raja, Bob Bernstein,Heidi Schellman, Steve Geer, Panagiotis Spentzouris 1. Charge Those present are being asked by the Fermilab Directorate to participate in a study of the physics capabilities of a neutrino factory. Heidi Schellman and Steve Geer have been fingered as co-coordinators for the study. A draft of the charge is appended below. Although the charge for the group is not yet final, we are encouraged to get cracking. We are expected to include others who are interested in the study ... and indeed would like to be as inclusive as possible. 2. Meetings We have only 6 months to complete the study. Therefore it is urgent to get started with regular meetings as soon as possible. It was thought that we should shoot for 2-hour long biweekly meetings in a room with a video link (either the Black Hole or the 12th floor). The only available time for the BH seems to be Monday mornings (11:00-1:00pm). The availability of the 12th floor is not known, but we suspect that Tuesdays 11:00 - 2:30pm may be available (Debbie is going to check). We plan to send an email round on Monday asking for preferences between the two choices (if 12th floor is available) ... and then another email late Monday announcing the chosen time and place of the meetings. It is hoped the first meeting will be Monday 27th Sept or Tuesday 28th Sept, and will have broad participation. 3. Distribution list We need to assemble an email list of all known interested people. Steve Geer and Heidi Schellman will maintain the list and make it available to all interested parties. Everyone in the group is asked to actively spread the word that the study is taking place. Additions to the email list should be sent to Heidi and Steve. The announcement of the first meeting should go to an even wider audience ... for example, all MINOS and MiniBooNe collaboration members. 4. Strawman table of contents In the first video meeting we plan to discuss a strawman table of contents -> who wants to do what. Heidi and Steve will try to assemble a first attempt at the strawman table of contents and email it round to the group before the meeting so that we can have a first iteration beforehand. 5. Sub-activities and publications It was pointed out that many of the sub-activities within the overall study could lead to a publication for the one or two individuals involved in the sub-study. This helps motivate people and should be encouraged. It is desirable that such publication targeted sub-studies be announced to the group early on to help maintain a healthy atmosphere. 6. Goals for the first video meeting Discuss strawman table of contents, who wants to do what, and schedule. Discuss CPU needs / code management needs, etc. (Panagiotis) -------------------------------------------------- Appendix 1: Draft Charge The charge for the group will be to deliver a concise report by March 31, 2000 that will explicitly include: 1. The physics motivation for a neutrino source based on a muon storage ring, operating in the era beyond the current set of neutrino oscillation experiments. 2. The physics program that could be accomplished at a neutrino factory as a function of: (a) The stored muon energy, with the maximum energy taken to be 50 GeV. (b) The number of muon decays per year in the beam-forming straight section, taken to be in the range from 10^19 to 10^21 decays per year. (c) The presence or absence of muon polarization within the storage ring. (d) For oscillation experiments, the baseline length including investigations evaluating matter effects.
