Minutes of the neutrino factory study meeting December 7, 1999 H. Schellman Theory Scenario IV - Sterile neutrinos - Albright Assume LSND confirmed SNO sees suppression SuperK is seeing numu->nutau Solar is nnue -> nus 4x4 matrix , 6 angles, 3 phases Simplify by assuming delta m12 ~ delta m34 << delta M23 ~ 0.3 eV2 (1,2) are sterile/electron No CP violation here. See this scenario at: http://www-theory.fnal.gov/people/parke/nutheory/ Neutrino Oscillation/detection Bernstein Look for nue->nutau with signal being a muminus Using a simple analysis and a MINOS like detector, the backgrounds are of order 10-4, 10-3 with pi/K decay dominating at low Enu, neutral current charm production Dominating at high Enu. Much comment that the cuts are somewhat primitive and much improvement is likely. ICANOE type detector - Mario Campanelli by phone from CERN. Due to problems with Video, he could not show his slides. They should should appear on the oscillations measurements group page soon. He did a 10Kton detector with 7000 km baseline. Looks at the energy distribution for Electrons, mu+, mu-, nolepton events for both mu+ and mu- Beams. Gives 8 distributions. Predict what they should be for various parameters, see what you get out of a fit to the simulation. Fits converge and don't seem to be finding Strange results. Will try our scenarios. More on beam characteristics/event rates - Heidi Schellman http://www.nuhep.nwu.edu/~schellma/neutrino_factory/ now has a rate study which has tables of event rates for various target sizes for total charged current and charm production cross sections. Use these to predict event rates for a set of experiments. Rate on a 1m diameter 2 m liquid H2 target is 50M/year for 10^20 50 GeV muminus decays, 5% of events are charm. Rate on a W-Si sandwich 20cm by 20cm with 2 m of total material is 450M events/year at 50 GeV, 25M charm, 2.5M Tagged charm -> mu. Kevin McFarland is doing more detailed studies. This is about 2 orders of magnitude larger than existing tagged charm samples. Much better limit on D0/D0bar mixing. We will have another meeting in 2 weeks time, Dec 21. 'Workshop' is tentatively scheduled for Feb 17-18.
