What I learned at NESS...
Milind Diwan's Talk at NESS covered in more detail the brookhaven LOI
and specifically had some very interesting plots of the neutral pi0 rejection
(for a water cereknov device) as a function of (pi0) energy (see pages 19,20).
The brookhaven LOI uses water cerenkov for a "high"
energy neutrino beam, but by only accepting single-ring events, they manage to
keep the backgrounds low (at the price of efficiency). Because the beam they
propose sending to NUSL is wide-band, the total number of events is large and
then makes up for the small acceptance.
