MUCOOL Mtg. 1/21/00 Minutes Scribe: Jim Norem We had a short meeting. Mike Zisman described some recent results in training the 5T solenoid. They were hoping that when they warmed the coils they would not require further retraining, so they tried it. Warming did in fact mean the coils had to be retrained back from about 80% down. It was felt that polarity changes may also require some training, but both modes have reached full field. They think the magnet should be shipped and further tests should be done here. Alvin wanted a full history of the training, with all quenches. Rick and Steve described some studies of a 20 cm LH2 target between two 90 cm solenoids, which functioned as spectrometers. 1/2 mm windows were assumed. They put an emittance of 1500 in and got 2250 out. They found that correlations are introduced by canonical angular momentum, and, as the field was increased the emittance decreased. Fields of 1.23T and 1.99T were used, and there was some discussion whether 0.66T would also be a useful field. In this context there was some discussion of target only experiments, which have been labeled "muon heating", and the general question of what level of experiment qualifies as a Phase One. Don has been continuing with calculations of a 1 T, 1 m spectrometer using 300 micron errors. Resolution is 300 MeV +-0.2 MeV including multiple scattering. With 250 micron mylar windows and a He/Isobutane mixture and 1 mrad angular resolution, this increases the errors to DE/E ~+- 0.5 MeV. There was some discussion of the availibility of useful drift chambers. Gail is getting set up to to simulations with Dan's files.
