Minutes of MuCool meeting 12/4/98 News: The collaboration meeting will take place next week -- Mon thru Wednesday in the Penthouse (2nd floor of the Booster West Tower. Thornton Murphy: The AIP funds to support the Meson 120 project were postponed into FY01. This covers conversion of beam transport upto the Meson Area. It would not include coversion of MCenter and MPolarized for MuCool. If funds are available on 10/1/00, beam to Meson could be available about one year later. Some schedule conflicts exist in the TeVatron tunnel at F17 to A0, since access is allowed only when beam is not running. Current goal is for beam to Meson on 10/1/01. A kicker currently used in the TeVatron may be available for the Meson transport system to generate the 15 Hz beam, each pulse of about 20 microseconds duration. This matches well into the warm cavity design, which will be limited to about a 15 microsec lifetime. This is about a factor of two reduction from the cold cavity design. MuCool will have to compete for space with 3~4 other groups in the Meson Area. PAC review of these proposals has not taken place at this time, but within the next year, we might expect to see the experimental program evolve. Dan Kaplan: Has made several interesting simulation runs of LiH cooling channel and the affect of windows on cooling properties. It remains uncertain whether a separate beryllium window will be used for the RF cavities. These studies lead to a reassessment of the required diameter of the LiH absorber -- a five centimeter radius may be sufficient. Action items -- Explore exotic windows; resolve RF cavity window and its inclusion into cooling design. A new program at IIT may provide for a graduate student in mechanical engineering to work on the LiH flask. NASA may fund this program. Steve Kahn: A bug was found in the field maps. Correcting the bugs will affect the field quality at the transition regions. New runs will be needed with the bugs fixed. Expect to hear more next week at the collaboration meeting.
