Guide to Life at Fermilab

Upon Arrival at Fermilab

Vehicle Cards and Ids
Located in Batavia, Illinois, the main entrance is at on Farnsworth Ave. (Kirk Road) and Pine Street, 3 miles north of the I-88/ Farnsworth Ave.
Currently, three gated entrances provide access to Fermilab Pine St., Batavia Rd. and Wilson Rd. Please note the restrictions in effect.

The entry tickets are available seven days a week during hours the Laboratory is open to the public. The entry ticket allows the holder to exit Fermilab through the same entry point the ticket was dispensed from.

If the ticket holder wants to exit through the opposite gate (i.e., enters at Pine St. and wants to exit through the Batavia Rd. gate) they can stop at Wilson Hall and obtain a ticket for the Batavia Rd gate. The entry tickets can be used by members of the general public or by employees, users, or contractors who do not have an assigned tag or card in their possession.

Visitors requiring access after hours may call the Communication Center, via the intercom at each gate, to request access. The Communication Center can activate the gates remotely.

If you are coming to Fermilab for the first time, you will need a Fermilab ID and an Entrance Card for your vehicle. To begin this process, go to the Users Office (location described before) between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM. They will have you fill out some paperwork to get officially registered, and you will receive basic Fermilab safety training. After you register, you may proceed to the Key and ID Office located just outside the west elevators on the ground floor. They will take your picture and give you your ID. Carry it with you at all times.

It is also useful, while you are in the Key and ID Office, to obtain either a magnet card for the front windshield of your vehicle (if you are going to be staying here for more than 6 months), or a plastic card (if you are just visiting, or are driving a rental). This allows you to open automatically the gates.

Computer and Email accounts
You are also going to likely need a computer account at Fermilab. The Computing Division (http://www.fnal.gov/cd) has a web page where you can find Form Requests (http://www.fnal.gov/cd/main/forms.html) for all kinds of computer accounts and more.

One of the default mailing accounts is an account for fnal.gov. This machine is a mail server that allows you to set the forwarding address on the mail that is sent to your_user_name@fnal.gov.

The Computer Division also offers help and instructions on how to setup your email accounts (http://www.fnal.gov/cd/email.htm):

The Fermilab Mail Server: fnal.gov (Your permanent email address at Fermilab)
Mailing Lists and aliases
Mail Server Protocols: IMAP and POP
Email on UNIX
Email on Windows NT, 95/98 and 3.x
Email on Macintosh
Migration from VMS Systems - Mail reader choices and conversion tools
Additional Email Resources

If you have a question or any kind of computer problem you can email helpdesk@fnal.gov or call X2345.

The Fermilab Computing Division training program (http://www.fnal.gov/cd/training.html) offers classes to employees and visiting scientists of Fermilab and Argonne National Laboratory. The types of classes offered include programming classes in Object Oriented approaches including classes in C++, Java and Python. Classes in Unix and also Windows NT are also offered as are classes in the Microsoft Office Suite. There is an 80% subsidy for graduate students from institutions or universities members of the URA (Universities Research Association).

Calling Instructions and General Information for phones at Fermilab
(from the Fermilab Phone Directory)

Extensions within the Laboratory:

All Fermilab phones are area code 630, prefix 840. From an on-site phone, dial only the 4-digit extension. Usually written X(4-digit-number).

On-Site (Audio) Pagers: From an on-site phone, dial 72. Wait for the tone, then dial the 4-digit pager number. (If the pager number is only 3 digits, prefix it with a 0). When the phone is answered, speak a short, clear message including your name and extension. If you are at an off-site phone, you may call the Fermilab Operator (630-840-3000) and ask the operator to deliver the page on your behalf. On-site pages are usually transmitted immediately.

Long-Range (Digital) Pagers: From an on-site, touch-tone phone, dial 9 to get an outside line and the full pager number (including area code, if it isn't local). Not all Fermilab phones are capable of reaching an outside line; in this case, punch 0 to get the Fermilab operator, who can dial the number for you. Wait for the phone to be answered, and for the 3 beeps; then punch in the phone number where the person can reach you. It sometimes takes up to 15 minutes for a long-range page to be transmitted to the person; please wait by the phone until they call you back!

Transfer of Calls: Depress switch-hook momentarily and upon hearing a recall dial tone, dial extension number. When the call is answered, tell the party that you are transferring a call, hang up; the call will then be connected.

Three-way Calling: Depress switch-hook, listen for dial tone. Dial the phone number of the third party. When third party answers, depress switch-hook once. All three parties are connected. You may have one internal and two outside, or two internal and one outside, or three internal.

Consultation Hold: To hold party on line while calling another party, depress switch-hook momentarily; upon hearing recall dial tone, dial extension number. After you talk to your party and they hang up, depress switch-hook twice to reconnect to your original call.

Call Hold: A few Laboratory phones have Call Hold (Dial 18). Depress switch-hook momentarily, receive recall dial tone, dial 18. This puts your call on hold. After dialing 18, you will receive a dial tone; dial your intended number. To dismiss the second call, hang up; your telephone will ring you back. You are now reconnected to your first call. To hold a second person, depress switch-hook once, receive dial tone, dial 18, reconnect with the original person. Repeat procedure to alternate conversation.

Call Pickup: A few Laboratory phones have Call Pickup (Dial 19). Another telephone rings, receive dial tone, dial 19, and that call is connected to your telephone. Only phones within your assigned pickup group can be answered by dialing 19.
