Guide to Life at Fermilab

Day Care
In our area there are no public day care centers. A day care facility is available at Fermilab (X3762), but there is a long waiting list, so you should sign up as soon as possible. The day care facility is flexible about the number of days and hours the child attends each week and charges accordingly. The current monthly cost of full time Child Care at this facility is $753.42 for infants, ages 6 weeks to 15 months; $658.16 for ages 15 months to 3 years; and $562.90 for children 3 years to 6 years old. Prices may change. Call for current rates.

For a list of private daycare and nursery schools, you should probably consult the yellow pages.

In Appendix D you will find a list of preschools and kindergarten close to Fermilab.

Fermilab also has a co-operative playgroup for children from 18 months old to 5 years old. The group meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the basement below Dorm 3 in the Village. Playgroup hours are from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM. As a condition of participation in playgroup, the parents must contribute one morning a week with the program. During playgroup, children are read stories, listen to music, and participate in crafts. The space in Playgroup is limited, so it is best to reserve a place. Call Trina Castilla for details (X4752).

Children's Summer Day Camp
Fermilab sponsors three supervised Day Camp sessions for children of ages 7-12. The program consists of arts and crafts, sports, field trips, films, swimming, etc.

The program is held in the lower level of Kuhn Barn in the Village, Mondays through Fridays 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Unprogrammed supervision is available starting at 7:30 AM. Parents must pick up their children by 5:30 PM (after which a $10 late fee will be charged per child).

Maximum attendence is 30 per session. Admission will be made by lottery drawing on the last weekday of March. Call X2548 to apply, or check FermiNews in March for information.

Registration is available for full days. Fees for each session are $225 per child per session. Swim lessons will be coordinated with the summer pool program at an additional fee of $15 per day. A $100 deposit per session per child must accompany registration.

Schools
The elementary school age children on site attend the Currier School at 800 Gary's Mill Rd., West Chicago, IL - phone number (630) 293-6600. This is a small school in a good residential neighborhood. Currently, there is a fee of $44/year for Kindergarten, and $52/year for grades 1-6, although you should call for current prices. The number of children in a class averages 25 to 30. Many of the children on site begin the school year unable to speak English. Consequently, there is an English as a Second Language program in the nearby public schools, and the teachers are generally understanding and helpful.

Please note that the school will need proof of residence on Fermilab site, so when you register, be sure to take along a letter from housing declaring that you are living on-site. In addition, take any records from previous schools (e.g. immunizations) and a birth certificate or a passport for the child.

Children of families living in the small towns around Fermilab must attend the school in whose district they live.

In Appendix D you will find a list of elementary, middle and high schools closer than 10 miles to Fermilab.
