"Accelerator and NuMI Upgrades for NOvA"
Abstract:
The NuMI facility was commissioned in early 2005 for the
MINOS neutrino oscillation experiment and has delivered a total of more
than 2E20 protons on target. In preparation for the NOvA neutrino
experiment the NuMI facility will be upgraded to increase the rate of
protons on target from 400 kW to 700 kW. The upgrade will utilize the
Recycler Ring as a proton pre-injector which enables the Main Injector
to cycle as fast as allowed by the magnets, power supplies, and RF
system. We describe the modifications to the Recyler Ring to convert the
accelerator from a anti-proton storage ring into a proton pre-injector
capable of slip stacking 12 Booster batches. Modifications to the NuMI
beam line are also necessary to handle the increased beam power on
target and to change the neutrino energy spectrum from the "low energy"
spectrum needed by MINOS to the "medium energy" spectrum needed by NOvA
