Title:
"Probing the Quark-Gluon Plasma at the LHC with Z0-Tagged Jets"
Abstract:
There is strong indication that a new state of matter, the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), is created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. An important tool in quark-gluon plasma studies at RHIC has been the measurement of hadronic dijets. Traversing hadrons strongly interact with the QGP medium and lose energy. At LHC energies, the rates for parton-parton interactions that produce an electromagnetic particle and an associated hadronic jet make the study of Z0-tagged jets possible. The experimental signature is provided by the measurement of muon pairs from Z0 decays, for which CMS is an ideally suited detector. The Z0 measured kinematics give direct access to the initial energy of the opposite side jet and, for the first time ever, direct measurement of jet energy loss in the QGP.
