Minutes of the April 20, 2006 UEC Quality of Life Subcommittee Meeting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alton, Diehl (chair), Finley, Merritt, Welty-Rieger Agenda: Next Meeting Quality of Life Survey Proposal Career Night(s) Discussion Next Meeting ------------ UEC Meeting May 6th, 2006 Career Night(s) Discussion -------------------------- The idea is that a variety of people who have moved on from being a post-doc or graduate student talk about what they are doing and whether they think it is an opportunity available for others to consider for a career. In the past there have been, typically, three speakers during a single career night. While that seems limited in scope compared to the range and breadth of opportunities available in the wide world, it has been popular among graduate students and post-docs, who look with relatively short time-scale at potential opportunities and career paths. This years QoL Chair wants the graduate students and post-docs to know that we want every one of you to remain in the field, if that is what you want to do. We also believe that is possible, for the most part. So there will be a Career Night and maybe more than one. A list of people who we would like to have speak at a Career Night or participate in a panel discussion at another Career Night, or simply be available as a contact can be compiled and is underway. It is likely that Career Night happens during the Summer sometime. We are hoping to identify a Post-doc volunteer or two to organize this as the graduate students are already quite active in the UEC. Quality of Life Survey Proposal ------------------------------- The QoL subcommittee has a historical tendency to take surveys and we won't break the tradition. The overall theme of this survey, as expressed by Finley, is "Is the relationship between the users and Fermilab, including the staff, as positive as it should/could be?" This survey is to concentrate, but is not exclusively aimed at, female lab users (and staff). We worked on forming questions for the survey. The discussion divided them into informational and wide-scale issues vs. small issue-oriented. This is the second iteration. We welcome development improvements of any kind. Informational * Male/Female * Point in Career Undergraduate Graduate student PostDoc Tenure-track Tenured * University/Lab Employee/Other * Location Stationed at Fermilab Stationed away from Fermilab * User community of primary affiliation (more than one may apply?) LHC ILC Tevatron Collider Physics Astroparticle Physics Neutrino Physics Other Fixed Target Theoretical Physics Accelerator Physics Other * Do you consider yourself primarily a: Scientist Engineer Computer Professional Other Wide-scale survey questions * Would you recommend Fermilab as a place for scientists to do research? If not, why not? * Would you recommend Fermilab as a place for women scientists to do research? If not, why not. * How would you rate the quality of life at Fermilab? Unpleasant Pleasant Very Pleasant * If you have issues which are main drivers for your assessment, please list them. Narrow-focused Survey Questions DC Trip * Are you aware of the annual UEC/GSA trip to Washington, DC, to talk with Congress about physical science funding? * Have you ever communicated with your UEC/GSA representative regarding the Washington trip? * What is your feeling about the effectiveness of the current model of UEC/GSA representation of the HEP constituency? Ineffective Somewhat effective Very effective * If you have issues which are main drivers for your assessment, please list them. Other potential topics * Recycling/styrofoam use in the cafeteria. * We should ask the Foreign relations subcommittee if they have any suggestions. * Broadening the UEC constitution. We included engineers, should we also include computer professionals or might they be considered computer engineers? * Batavia Library (perhaps not an issue if negotiations are resolved between Batavia and DOE). * Athletics (see below) * Women's Dormitory (see below) * Athletics a) Are you aware that Fermilab has various after-work sports available for users and employees? _ Yes _ No b) Which Fermilab sports league do you currently participate in (please check all that apply)? _ Softball _ Soccer _ Basketball _ Tennis _ Golf _ Bowling _ Running _ Bicycling _ skiing _ Volleyball _ Other (please specify): c) Which, if any, of these sports would you be interested in participating in were there a female-only league or club sport (please check all that apply) that met, say, one a week? _ Softball _ Soccer _ Basketball _ Tennis _ Golf _ Bowling _ Running _ Other (please specify): d) Would you be interested in helping form a team in an all-female league or club? If so, please note the sport. _ Yes _ No d') Do you know about the running club? * Women's Dormitory e) Are you aware that Fermilab now offers an all-female area of a few dormitory rooms and a bathroom in Aspen East in the Village? _ Yes _ No f) Have you used the Women's Dorm area? h) If so, are you satisfied with the all-female area in Aspen East in the Village? _ No, it is not satisfactory. It lacks a private (check all that apply) _ Kitchen _ Living area _ Sufficient rooms _ Other _ Yes, it is satisfactory enough. _ Yes, it is exactly what I want. _ No, we shouldn't have an all-female area anywhere in the Village. _ Don't know. i) Do we want an all-male dorm? _ Yes _ No _ Maybe
