Matthew Jones Statement: Fermilab is truly a wonderful place to work and the historical goal of serving the needs of the user community continues to shape the unique character of life at the lab. Having worked at Fermilab for approximately a decade, I have experienced many aspects this way of life and would bring to the UEC a broad user perspective. I have spent many years both commuting from a home institute and as a user based at the lab. I have worked closely with Fermilab operations and understand the interaction between the experiments and the Accelerator Division. I have the responsibility of supervising graduate students and post-docs based at Fermilab and watching out for their well being and future career success. Finally, I am acutely aware of the evolving roles played by national laboratories and the university high energy physics programs. Funding constraints over the past several years have already had a serious impact on both universities and national labs. I feel that the UEC is in an ideal position to communicate the concerns of both the academic institutes and the laboratory itself to the public and to public officials. I also feel that the UEC has the important role of working to ensure that the users are well informed and can fully support the decisions that will have important and lasting impact on the way the lab functions through the completion of the Tevatron program, into the LHC era and beyond. Because of the relatively close proximity of Fermilab to Purdue University, I have a vested interest in seeing Fermilab remain a leading facility at which to conduct world class research. I would serve the UEC and carry out lobbying efforts to the best of my abilities to ensure that Fermilab maintains this status through the transition into the LHC era and that its user community can provide the support needed to sustain Fermilab's long term vitality.
