Some Other Kane and DuPage County Butterflies
(not yet seen at Fermilab)

Several species of butterflies live in Kane and DuPage Counties in northeastern Illinois but have not appeared at Fermilab.  These are certainly butterflies to watch for.

family Lycaenidae (Gossamer-wing Butterflies)

Striped Hairstreak (Satyrium liparops

A hairstreak found at West Chicago Prairie, just a few miles north of Fermilab in DuPage County, but I have never found it at Fermilab.

family Nymphalidae (Brushfoots)

Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis)

This species is common in West Chicago Prairie, DuPage County, but I have never seen it at Fermilab.

Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton)

This medium-sized butterfly lives in relatively undisturbed wetlands in Kane and DuPage counties but apparently not in any of Fermilab's wetlands.

Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis

This is a common butterfly in the midwest, associated with Hackberry trees, but we have not seen it around any of the Hackberry trees at Fermilab.

family Hesperidae (Skippers)

Broad-winged Skipper (Poanes viator

This is an uncommon wetland skipper which we have not yet seen at Fermilab but which is found at Nelson Lake Marsh just west of Batavia.

Long Dash (Polites mystic

Another wetland skipper living at Nelson Lake Marsh but not yet found at Fermilab.  This skipper flies in June and is often attracted to Blue Flag Iris which blooms at that time.
