installation from plain tar file

At locations where upd and ups are not available, if you have installed from a tar file by hand, you will want to add a definition of the environment variable JUKE_DIR to the appropriate login files so that it is the path name of the root of the jukebox software directory, add it to your environment as well, and run the $JUKE_DIR/ups/tailor script. You will then need to initialize the location lookup table files (with initdb) for any new jukeboxes.

You also want to make sure that
$JUKE_DIR/bin/juke is in people's command search paths. Your system needs to run the $JUKE_DIR/ups/start script at system boot (i.e. via /etc/rc or /etc/inittab, etc.), which will start the rpc daemon if there are any locally configured jukeboxes.
