Chapter 9: FNALU
FNALU is a multi-node UNIX computing resource managed by the Computing Division and available to all Fermilab employees and users.
The FNALU website is maintained at http://www-oss.fnal.gov/scs/fnalu/.
9.1 Purpose and Use
FNALU is a general-purpose resource, but its primary purpose is for physics analysis computing. The FNALU cluster provides:
- interactive services
- batch services (see Chapter 14: Batch Processing Environment)
- X-terminal boot services
- UNIX Product Distribution services (see Chapter 9: Accessing Software Products)
on a variety of UNIX systems running IRIX (SGI), Solaris (Sun) and Tru/64 (Compaq) and RedHat Linux operating systems.
Use of the FNALU cluster should be consistent with the terms of the Fermilab Policy on Computing at http://www.fnal.gov/cd/main/cpolicy.html.
9.2 Accounts
FNALU supports two types of accounts:
- Standard Accounts
- are available for users who will use minimal computing resources (less than 100 Mbytes of disk space and less than 1% of the available CPU). To request one, submit the Computer Account Request Form at http://www.fnal.gov/cd/forms/acctreq_form.html.
- Grant Request Accounts
- are used by projects that require significant computing resources. A project leader requests this type of account by submitting a Project Request Form at http://www.fnal.gov/cd/forms/unixform_form.html. This form asks you to describe your project and estimate your CPU, disk, and tape requirements, thus enabling the system managers to perform capacity planning.
