Mailing Personal Packages

Memo dated January 7, 1997

To: All Fermilab Employees and Users

From: James E. Finks, Jr.

Subject: Mailing Personal Packages

Recently, our Mailroom was notified that the United States Postal Service, in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration, changed package collection procedures. The new procedures require that customers with parcels weighing 16 oz. or more present them in person at their local post office. This change was designed to enhance airline security measures and to protect the traveling public, postal employees and postal contractors who transport United States mail. Information on the new procedures is available in the Mailroom.

In keeping with this new policy, effective January 27, 1997, the Fermilab Mailroom will no longer be able to accept stamped domestic or international packages weighing 16 ounces or more.

Although some employees and visitors may view this as an inconvenience, we believe the heightened concern for increased airline security outweighs any negative impact.
