Nego Gato: African-Brazilian Music & Dance

Performing at such venues as The Kennedy Center, and with world music stars such as Oludum, Nego Gato has brought the colorful beauty, rich legacy and explosive power of Afro-Brazilian music, dance and Capoeira to audiences across the United States.
In addition their education, outreach, and arts empowerment programs have touched the lives of thousands throughout Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Capoeira is a martial art form created by African slaves in Brazil who had to disguise their practice of fighting moves by making
them look like dance. It is remarkable for its breathtaking athleticism, but also includes the training of music and dance,
as well as philosophy.
Mestre Jose Sena, known as Nego Gato, is the founder and namesake of Nego Gato. To be trained in Capoeira is an extensive commitment and includes learning of the music, instruments,
and philosophies of the art form as well as the acrobatic movements, attacks and defenses, eventually mastering the flips,
high kicks and acrobatics for which Mestre Nego Gato and Capoeira is renowned. Their performances including the elaborate
costumes found only in Bahia, the machete-wielding Maculela, a dance created by their ancestors enslaved in Brazil as well
as the music which incorporates elements of samba reggae, afroxe and Afro-Jazz.

The Stars of Dance Chicago is an international touring group that consists of Chicago's most vibrant dancers, choreographers and
dance masters selected by Artistic Director John Schmitz to represent Dance Chicago. Schmitz states: "They perform a dizzying premiere
showcase where ballet mingles with jazz, modern mixes into hip-hop and tap burst onto the scene in a brilliant kaleidoscope of dance.
These choreographers aren't trying to reinvent the wheel - they've found new ways of making it roll. Whether they leave you
speechless or screaming for more, these are the dances you will never forget. Toes tap, hips hop. Smooth moves on hard groves.
The Stars of Dance Chicago is about racing hearts, sweaty palms and unbridled passion. Who needs rhyme and reason when you've got
the rhythm? This is new artistry in full Technicolor in a most exhilarating dance program."
Performers include M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Thodos Dance Chicago, Live Music by Stone, Chicago Tap Theatre, Chicago Ballet,

entrance (from Kirk Road in Batavia) and the Batavia Road
entrance (west of Rte. 59 in Warrenville) are open. Our
