Energy 101: Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Energy

What are 10 key concepts about energy that everyone should know? This is an intriguing question to which Dr. Cutler
Cleveland has devoted considerable thought. Energy prices are at near record levels, the future of world oil production is
the subject of intense debate, and climate change is rapidly moving to the front of public consciousness. Encapsulating
energy science into 10 concepts is a daunting exercise for many reasons. Foremost is that the concept of energy is highly
interdisciplinary, and so it is found in fields ranging from particle physics to cultural anthropology, and from ecosystem
ecology to resource economics. Physicists and economists would no doubt debate the 10 most important implications of energy
for their respective disciplines; carving out just 10 principles across all fields will leave out important ideas.
Nonetheless, the link between energy and human well-being is so deep and so compelling that a list of core principles
forms the seed for important discussion and debate.
Cutler J. Cleveland is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment and the
Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Boston University. Dr. Cleveland is
Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy, winner of an American Library Association award
and the Dictionary of Energy, and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of
Earth. Dr. Cleveland is a member of the American Statistical Association's Committee on
Energy Statistics, an advisory group to the Department of Energy, a participant in the
Stanford Energy Modeling Forum, and is a Senior Fellow at the National Council for Science and
the Environment. He is the recipient of the Adelman-Frankel Award from the United States
Association of Energy Economics for "unique and innovative contributions to the field of energy
economics." Dr. Cleveland is Chairman of the Environmental Information Coalition, the
governing body of the Earth Portal. He has won publication awards from the International
Association of Energy Economics, the American Library Association, and the National Wildlife
Federation. He has won teaching awards from the University of Illinois and the Honor's Program in
the College of Arts and Sciences of Boston University. Dr. Cleveland has been a consultant
to numerous private and public organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, the United
Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, Charles River Associates, the Technical Research
Centre of Finland, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
